The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

From what I read this morning looks like the election went pretty good.

When my son was here the other day, looking at this thread, he asked me if anyone on here used alfalfa hay. He said he thought out west that was all they used. I didn't know.

We fed alfalfa to the Arabs in high school, when I was showing, and it was common for show horses. I think it's become a lot less common, the feed stores stock much more orchard grass than alfalfa, and alfalfa is mostly fed to cattle. It's cheaper than good orchard grass.

I actually think many have come to realize it is more protein than most family horses need, and most vets don't recommend it except perhaps for horses in really hard work.

Glad you had a good trip out of town...

Cats in heat are worse than dogs, I think. ;~D

Around here alfalfa is more expensive then the grass hay.

The particular group of vets that use it recommend that that is ALL a horse needs. The stuff they bring in and use tho you can't even find growing in the field here, let alone hayed. I've never seen stuff so dark green.

Some farmers here add a little bit of alfalfa to grass field if it's really bland. It's interesting that no one grows it there, because here, it's grown in Eastern WA, which I think has a similar climate to you.

Hello everyone.

Just got back from our trip to the mountains. Had a great time sitting by the fire watching the ice storm.

Sugar missed her chance this weekend. I thought surely that she would drop that foal on an icy weekend while we were out of town. She's about an inch wider, but that's about it.

Well, I am glad you didn't miss it. I worried about her with the ice and cold too.... it seemed like the kind of stunt your horses like to pull. ;~D

From what I read this morning looks like the election went pretty good.

It sure has that potential. It didn't blow up on us... And that makes me really hopeful!

Hey guys Glad to hear that you had a good time on your separate trips this weekend. I'm going to New York again in March, and New Mexico in April. The NM trip I'm really excited about.

Animal Advocates has a program where they'll discount your animal's neutering. I'm not sure if it's just a program that's here, or a nationwide program, but talk to your local ASPCA. They might be able to help you.

Ya need to rent yourself a Harley while you're there, you can really open one up out there, crank it up too about a 100mph and lay back and cruse :)

I would LOVE to rent myself a harley, but sadly don't have a motorcycle license. Ya see... I have a difficult time holding one up when it comes time to stop.

We use exclusively alfalfa here. It runs about $100 a ton here, sometimes up to $120 ton, delivered. It has a lot more protein than grass hay, it's pretty consistant and it's cheaper here than grass. Grass hay runs about $8-10 or $10.50 per bale here. In addition, grass hay here is really just filler.

Grass hay is basically a filler here too, and roughage. That's why everyone has to grain.

I've never really thought much about or figured if the alfalfa would be more economical. It's just not grown much around here.

The one female kitty is in heat. She certainly is getting obnoxious about it too

LOL!!! Females in heat of any species can get pretty obnoxious, but especially cats!

Most of the chains do not allowed smoking, so I will not go there.

I'm just the opposite, I won't go if they ALLOW smoking. So what's a poor restaurant owner to do? Toss a coin and hope for the best I guess.

The alfalfa hay we use here is all the horses need. Our working horses get grain and the brood mares get grain during the last part of their pregnancy. Well, by grain I mean Equine Senior or Strategy or Mare and Foal - whichever is applicable.
