Thread Four: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1332664/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Yep... that's the stuff.
And no problem.... you're welcome ;~D

MARKINGS LIST: It is highly desirable for a horse to have irregular edges and/or roaning at the edges of the white markings. Further it is desired that the shape of the markings themselves be odd shaped or a partial marking such as a stocking running up only one side of the leg. In the case of minimally marked horses it is necessary that they also express at least two or more of the below listed markings in order to qualify for registry. Applicant may be asked to take a detailed photograph of a particular marking in order for the Registry to ascertain if that marking is an expression of the Sabino . 1. Star 2. Strip 3. Snip 4. Lip spot 5. Chin spot 6. Jaw or throat spots or splashes 7. Belly spots or splashes 8. Roaning 9. Roan ticking 10. Isolated body spots 11. Irregular face markings 12. Bald face 13. Blaze face 14. Stockings 15. High white stockings 16. Lightning strikes 17. Partial socks or stockings 18. Leg patches 19. Apron face 20. Hoof stripes on dark legs 21. Ink dots 22. Mottled skin

Thanks. I thought I had one saved as favorite but I can't find it. I think she has a lot of these characterisics.
Looks like he's deep in thought there on that page :)
Yeah. He likes it up here for some reason.
Good taste in websites - a conservative cat :)
I know we all talked about it awhile back but do you have any recommendations for good vet books? There is one in the catalog called How to be your own Veterinarian(sometimes) Ever heard of it?
I haven't heard of that one. I have Dr Kellon's Guide to First Aid for Horses by Eleanor Kellon, VMD and then The Illustrated Veterinary Encyclopedia for Horsemen by Equine Research Inc.
You are a nurse aren't you?
I'll look at those. I'm thinking about just getting a paperback I can throw in this fancy 1st aide kit I'm putting together. I would like to have some texts around here though.
The First Aid for Horses is a small spiral bound book that you can throw in a tack box or medical kit.
I was thinking you were a nurse and might find something like the Merck Manual interesting and also the vet books.
G'Morning Duchess, All!
I'm catching up here so pardon me for posting a late suggestion about your horses eating each other's tails.
I can't remember how or if you feed hay to your horses, but keeping a roll of hay out there with them all the time might keep them occupied enough to keep them from doing this. It sounds like a stable vice they've picked up, kinda like cribbing, and they'll probably keep doing it unless you give them something else to do.
It's been my experience that horses just need something to chew on all the time to give them something to do, and if they don't have grass to chew on, they're GONNA find something else, be it a post, a tree, a rail or a tail. I think God designed them that way.
Good morning.
Becky
You can also try www.jeffersequine.com. They have good prices and ship lots quicker than stateline.
LOL That kitty likes FR.
The college textbooks are by far the best things to have on hand, in my opinion. There aren't any vet schools near me so I have to buy them from barnes and noble.com or amazon.com. At barnes and noble.com, if you go to college textbooks and put in equine in the search box, you'll get tons of interesting books.
On the other hand, if you like to read anecdotes along with the vet care, "The Horse Doctor Is In" is a really good read. Lots of information on horse health care but he discusses his real life cases with clients and horses and it's really interesting to read. It's not full of technical jargon that you need a vet dictionary to understand, it's all in layman's terms. It's one of my favorite books. Author is Brent Kelley, DVM.
You had also mentioned one called "Horse Owner's Veterinary Handbook" and posted a picture of it. I have that one and it's been very helpful.
I think you and I are the only ones up.
Frog was here earlier.
Morning is my time to sit, drink coffee, read the news, and listen to the quiet:)
I checked our forecast, it is suppose to stay cold, gray and gloomy till Wed:(.
2 weeks ago our regular Sun. Resturant where we eat breakfast with another couple gave us such bad service that we are boycotting it for a few weeks. Today we are going to go eat a "brunch" buffet at a place in Tulsa Mack and I ate at about a year ago. It's a bit pricey but the food was great, and so many choices that you don't get other places. I'm kind of looking forward to it. They even have a live piano player playing.
