The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Don't know that I'd want to be on her if she decided to get rid of a rider. Heaven knows what she might be able to do. :)

I forgot to tell yall that my trainer invited Eddie and I to a tack auction tomorrow. She had to explain the rules to me. #1 , if a bunch of something don't bid and raise the price unless I want first choice:') .

What's funny about her is that she can do all these leaps and twists and 'airs obove the ground' kind of maneuvers... and will, just to avoid fly spray. and she's so little, that it's hard for her to break out of my hands... though she has. She's like working with a baby horse. I 'thoughtlessly' sprayed water right in her butt during one bath, and she just sat down. like a dog. She's a comic to watch, which is why I have thought if she wasn't so panicky, she'd be a talented pony for things like comedy tricks. I started to teach her how to bow a couple times... but I've never stuck with it.

Scratching is a big part of her entertainment in a day... In this pic she is scooting... pushing herself backwards on the ground, to itch her butt.

How did you come across Pony anyway? You might have told the story, but I forget.

She belonged to a friend.

I was with my friend when she bought her at an auction. My friend was looking for a pony for her son who was 7. I actually picked her out of the group as being a very pretty pony she should look at. She was ridden in the sale ring by a young kid, was such a pretty and quiet pony in the ring, and my friend bought her for $400.

The next day the drugs had worn off... she tossed the kid every time he got on and we put him back on... she wasn't broke at all... I worked with her for awhile, she just was so easily spooked... she'd spook, the kid would come off and she'd just panic about it. They sent her to a trainer for 30 days... and the trainer made a lot of headway with her, could ride her by the time the 30 days was up, but she was still going to be too much pony for a small beginner, even with more training... she was just too high strung and quick. So she bought a different pony, I brought this pony here, partly because Bay needed a companion, partly because I felt responsible for my friend getting her in the first place, and the idea was I'd sell her.

But I talked all buyers out of taking her, they always wanted a first pony for a little kid... this pony needed some kind of very experienced kid who wanted a very fast gaming or eventing pony. No one like that showed up... or anyone who said they would invest in training. I feared the pony would end up hurting a kid and end up back at the sale, to repeat it again and again and again.... so I kept her. I'm really attached to her, and she's come a long way toward settling down.... but she's still dangerous for a kid. I wouldn't set a kid on her now even to pony around.

Now, if someone wanted to come work with her, I'd help... I'd build her a round pen with padded sides if I thought someone would give her a chance... she's such a pretty jumper and so nimble. It's just hard to find someone experienced enough who still wants to ride a 12 HH pony. If they're strong enough to handle her, they could handle a horse.

My DIL and friend are here for dinner, hubby and son got home from California with the tractor, neighbor came over and both my nephews came by. One more person and I can't divide dinner any smaller :)

I'll get on later tonight and put up a link for you.

I'm placing a stateline tack order. Is vet wrap the same as vetrap? They look the same and 1.99 a roll. Feed stores around here don't carry this kind of stuff.
