Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Thanks. My husband and I just have to stop arguing in front of the kids (and the trainer):')
That's the kind of attitude to have :) The cause of the symptom is critical, just as with people, and dictates the treatment a lot of the time.
LOL - that never ends. Seems Bob and I are always arguing about what kind of treatment is needed. He has the experience and the mechanics but sometimes I can just look at one of my babies and know there is a problem. Try explaining that to someone who deals only in logic.
They were worth it, I have 5 beautiful kids. I don't want to do it anymore, though. Enough is enough.
Drugs really don't affect me much, except for Morphine. It doesn't like me and wants out. One pump of that and it's a pukefest.
If you have a horse with a chronic problem and you know what to do, doesn't make much sense to call the vet. I don't try to diagnose problems, I just fix the ones that I'm already familiar with.
Ace is also a good drug to have in your arsenal and you can put it in the muscle and it works just as well as in the vein. Takes a little longer to work, though.
I'm like that with codiene. Drugs go right to me. I would never be a good recreational user. I would sleep thru the good parts:')
Oh yeah, I agree with that. I'm doing real good with stuff that I've experienced. It's the first time stuff that pops up that I'm talking about.
LOL I don't like the drugs that slow you down. If I was going to be a drug user, I like the ones that speed you up. I lost alot of weight when I was taking a GNC product with ephedrine in it. I mean alot of weight. I went from 150 to 100 in less than 3 months. I was working out everyday, too. Shame they took that off the market, I loved the stuff.
Sorry I'm so late responding to your post. Life's been crazy lately with little or no time to be here at Free Republic let alone go riding.
My wife and I are avid western pleasure, trail/pack riders. We're just getting back into riding after many years away from horses because of other commitments and a lack of spending cabbage. We don't own any horses right now, but we ride weekly at a local training stable and we're currently looking for some horse property in the Phoenix area that would allow us to commute to our jobs easily but still have some room to train and have some trail access.
I'm interested in getting back into the wilderness on horseback, doing some endurance riding, and some reining and working cow horse competition. Hoping to start looking for some new mounts in a year or two. We'll be trying to find a couple of trail worthy Quarter Horses (preferably Paints) with enough competitve spirit for the arena also.
Nothing quite compares to the satisfaction of working, playing and being close friends with a thousand pound animal...except maybe a perfect landing at a really short backcountry airstrip in the middle of nowhere. Now you see the crux of my problem.
Hi,
We're just about neighbors - northern Nevada here. Although if my winters keeping getting worse, I may be headed that direction :)
Looking forward to having you join us.
I also ride trail these days... I competed in Arab and jumping circles earlier, and now I just like the quiet of trail, and sometimes a respectful imitation of a little dressage.
It's cool that you have access to horses to ride while you get yourself ready to get back into it.
I can't believe you can be that active outside in Phoenix... I am up in Washington State, and not very heat tolerant. I spent a few summers in Phoenix as a teenager... working for my Grandpa... and it's so hot there I thought I'd die just trying to move from the shade to the swimming pool. ;~D I can't imagine riding a sweaty animal in that kind of heat.
I don't ride in the heat, Hair. It's just miserable and I'm not heat tolerant, either. If I just have to work outside on a hot day I keep hosing myself down every few minutes. That's the only possible way I can do it. My barn is ok as long as I'm just sitting in a chair drinking a cold coke and have a fan on me.
I'm a paint freak, myself. Check out the who's who page and you'll see my pride and joy.
I am going to guess they ride a lot at night... Night seemed to be the only time I could stand to be outside in summer. Makes trail riding a little tough ;~D I guess you ride all winter, and take it easy in summer.
A lot of Arabs in the Phoenix area... They are better designed for it than this pudgy nordic-type chick. ;~D
The thing that would get to me there is the lack of shade... not just the shade of a covered porch, but the 20 degree difference it makes here just being in the woods.
That's exactly what I do... I lean over and pour the hose on my head. That's what I did below... I had hosed off my head, not sweat a ring in my shirt ;~D It was really hot, for my tastes, which is about 90 in these parts, so hot that I thought a tight saddle would have been a cruelty to the horse, so we took a walk in the shade bareback. If I didn't have a shady place to go, I wouldn't have been out there at all! I don't know how people do it down in the desert.
It's only hot here in Phoenix three months out of the year, the rest of the time it is wonderful. Special care to keep the horses cool during the summer months though.
You're right, during the summer we ride a lot at night and early in the morning (we have a lot of lighted arenas around here). The summer heat can be especially hard on some horses around here so you've got to be careful and do everything ya can to keep em cool.
Don't tell me you've never been on a moonlight trail ride.
I have never been on a moonlight trail ride ;~D
When I was a youngster my friends and I would take moonlight trail rides to our favorite party spot and have a bonfire - saddlebags full of liqour, beer and junkfood. Ah, my irresponsible youth, I wish I could go back.
