The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yes, I've used aspirin powder and it works well. Bute is phenylbutazone and is a prescription med. It is a non steroidal anti inflammatory for things like arthritis, pain from a sprain, sore feet, etc. It's aka phenylbute or Pro-Bute. It comes in powder, pills and I think also now an injectable.

Banamine is an analgesic with anti inflammatory and fever reducing properties. It is also used for pain and for colic. It too is a prescription med. The generic for it is fluximine (not sure of spelling)

Generally you can get a vet to give you Bute, sometimes depending on your experience with horses (or the faith the vet has in you) he'll give you banamine. You can fill prescriptions for both through places like Valley Vet.

I buy through Valley Vet - www.valleyvet.com

You can have the vet fax them the prescription or mail the original to them.

I buy my wormer from http://www.countrysupply.com and/or http://www.valleyvet.com - whoever is cheapest at the time.

I buy most of my shots through http://www.valleyvet.com - all the five way shots, tetanus toxiod, phenabort, etc. are essentially over the counter. No prescription is necessary. I buy West Nile from my feed store now although I think the on-line places are going to start carrying it.

Penicillen I get from my vet.

How often do you worm?

We worm every two months, give all shots in the spring - generally the first part of April. On mares that are going to foal, shots 30days prior to foaling.

I was looking at the banamine injectable and thought it was high at first but I see it's multiple doses. It might be something to have in stock but right now I would want to give it with my vet or trainers ok. How do you manage stock life thru the mail. What's to keep them from sending you something that may expire soon?.

At this point I don't think you should be giving your horses any type of meds without your trainer and/or vet's okay and assistance - those of us that do give the wrong impression I think. I know that we do because of years of experience and vets assistance. When we were beginning in horses, we used vets to do all of this. It's not a matter of saving money now, just that it's easier for us and for our vet for us to do it. We still call him at the drop of a hat for anything that we think is serious or to have him double check what we have done.

I have never worried about stock life - both Valley Vet and Omaha Vaccine are very reputable companies, well as is Country Supply. We've never had a problem. I do only order enough shots for the yearly vaccines for everyone, and some things like penicillin is good past expiration date.

That's what I respectfully meant. You can't buy experience. I can see having common ER stuff on hand for me but at this point in my "adventure" I would hesitate to give any med on my own unless they were looking at my horse and instructed it. I don't mean to come across as a lack of confidence but just cautious. It may come back and bite me but there is a lot of stuff on my first aide kit list and due to expense I've put medications at the bottom of the list since I know if I need them I'm going to be calling out the vet anyway. Hopefully I won't need him during a blizzard:')

Mornin', Cindy.

Personally, I think Banamine and Bute are the most important drugs to have on hand. Bute also comes in paste form, like wormer, it's easy to give and inexpensive. I use it alot, I have an old pony that sometimes looks like he could use some help and at his age, I want to keep him comfortable. He's also a chronic founder so I keep the Banamine on hand and I had a friend teach me how to do IV injections. His veins must be like broom handles, I have no trouble doing it. Can't do it on Tuffy, never can hit his vein. Also, my horse Bud colics if he gets excited (I swear he has irritable bowel) so I pop him with 12 cc's of Banamine and he's always fine.

Well, I'll be darn, I didn't know that those shots were over the counter. What about flu-rhino, is it over the counter? If you have a script, will they sell you rabies vaccination, or do you have to have a vet for that one? Every animal on my place gets rabies vaccinations, horses, goats, donkey, dogs and cats. We've had trouble with rabid skunks around here, 2 last year.

With bute I use the paste. So much easier.

I've never learned to give them in the vein. I'd like too. My son and daughter in law can. They give bute that way, works faster. I always intended to learn to do that the next time I have to use it. But then when I need it, they aren't available to show me and I use the paste.

Is it antibiotics that will kill a horse in seconds if you give it in the vein? I know there is something that will.

I guess I'm lucky, the guy at our feed store (I know him well) will sell me alot of this stuff. I don't think feed stores are suppose to do that, but he will if he knows you.

I'll be back in a bit, gotta take my daughter to a band thing.

There are some things you can't give in a vein but I only do Banamine so I'm not sure what they are. Also, there is another vein right there beside the vein you are supposed to use that if you hit it, your horse is gonna be in big trouble. I think the way to tell is the blood is really dark or maybe purple when you draw it up into the syringe if you are in the wrong vein. You just have to make darn sure that you are in the correct vein. I'll look all this up when I get back home and let you know exactly what's what.

Well, their vaccines certainly shouldn't be in the vein... they're a muscle shot... is that what you are thinking of maybe?

I don't give injections. I still call my vet for that. I don't like needles.

Good morning!

Yes, that's what I meant - cautious is good and in the beginning, get the vet until you've reached a point where you're comfortable with the diagnosis (that's the difficult part) that you have made yourself.

Yes the flu/rhino is the five way shot and it's available "over-the-counter" Rabies is not, that you need to get from a vet.

Good morning,
We don't give anything that has to go in a vein. We call the vet for that. Also, bear in mind that some drugs can cause an extreme reaction in some horses so you don't want to be giving that unless you know the antidote and have it on hand.

Giving muscle shots is not hard:) I take a curry comb and rub the area I'm giving it in for a minute or so pretty hard, kind of numbs the spot then stick it in. I have never had one even react doing it this way. They just stand there. Once the needel is in, I aspirate a bit to make sure I have no blood the push the plunger. I gave Belle a rhino Wed. after I got her home.

When I give a shot, I always make sure I know these things. I think it was antibiotics, but a girl that was in our Roundup club, kill a horse by putting it in the veing when it shouldn't have been in the vein. Dropped the horse before she even could pull it out. Was a nice horse too:(
