I did learn with my old mare - if she didn't go with just the slightest pressure, there was generally a pretty good reason - like a mountain lion just around the corner :)
I have a pair but just like any tool, I agree you that you need to know how to use them. Mine hanging on the wall right now until I'm satisfied I have the leg control not to "accidently" use them. Cowboy has fish on his. I have spurs, hat.... on mine:')
Heh... yeah... Bay's not unreasonable, so I'd hear him out if he seemed unwilling for no reason I could see. He trusted me when I told him he had to walk by that rotting pig, it's the least I can do. ;~D
Yeah, and he knows it.
It thaws out in the sun.... pony would like the group to mosy over that way ;~D
Becky... this is how Cyn is that I think is snotty... she comes nosing right up to ya in the pasture... but if you don't have food, it's "don't touch me"... She's allright, just fed too much by hand, and not as interested in a good head rub as Bay is.
Bay loves a good head rubbin'
That's all for now!
Great pictures.
Yes, that helps:).
I was just curious as to peoples feelings about them.
Becky
Well, I have seen some people who DO poke holes in a horse with them, or raise big goose eggs on the horse. IMO, a few times when it wasn't even necessary. It's what I/we refer to around here as the "cowboy" way:)
Becky
You know, alot of people out here don't use them. And alot of those that do, IMO, don't use them properly, that cowboy thing again:). And lots of times I've heard people around here talk about the use of spurs in a durogatory way. Like they think that spurs ARE for poking holes. Just wondered if those on here got that type of reaction.
Becky
Not to brag or anything:)...Harley, so far has worked equally well with or without. It's just that I always use them. I know the lady that rode him for the 30 days this summer did not use them, and she said he was fine. Even took jumps without the prodding of a spur.
I think I've gotten wary of people's opinions on my philosphy about horses:). In a nut shell, IMO, they are working animals, not pets. ANYTIME I have even a halter on one that is work time for them. I'm afraid (literally) to cut them slack, because I know my limitations. It's easier for me to keep problems from developing, then to fix one. Several times I've been told I was to rigid with them.
Becky
Great pictures:)
Wasn't Cyn raised on a bottle or something? I've heard that horses that are raised by humans because mom died or didn't have milk will be more pushy....er....snotty:) Easy to live with that tho, and pretty easy to fix with consistency.
I'm home early as we are getting heavy sleet right now. I didn't want to wait till later and have to drive on the roads after they got slick. I've got Mack's computer turning on now to load some pictures of our creeks. I was very very surprised that the big one was not out of it's banks yet. It is right at the top tho. Depending on how much more rain, and how much more run off there will be...it could still go out. ONe thing good, it goes back down very fast. It's just dangerous at night when it's hard to see if it's out or not. We know to watch for it.
Becky
It's a risk to be aware of, if I have occasion to raise an orphan someday.
He thought the difference that made all the difference with those foals is that they aren't kept alone and pet and loved on by people. They should be turned out with other more dominant horses where they learn manners.
Mine are pets, with jobs... but I still am fairly rigid with pets ;~D
Take that back... the pony doesn't even have a job ;~D
Well see I know me. I'm NOT rigid with my pets:). Susie is pretty spoiled.
Don't get me wrong. I love my horses. But it's more that I love them because of the job they do for me, rather then because they are my pet. If I couldn't ride them, I wouldn't keep them. Rideing for me is the fun of having them. Too much work involved in their upkeep to not get something back.
Becky
I'd keep mine... I am too reluctant to trust them to others, which is why I know better than to ever be a breeder of anything, dog, horse or beef cow ;~D
great pictures, but brrrrrrrr they make me feel cold!
Sometimes I feel there must be something wrong with me for not having a problem selling them. But I do take very good care of my horses, feed, vet care, etc. and don't like seeing horses that aren't cared for properly.
One reason, other then for profit:), that I do sell mine at top dollar price is I figure if someone pays that much for one they'll take care of it. There are some people I would not sell one too. AND there are some people I know that even if they could pay the top dollar, I wouldn't sell to them.
Becky
Somebody has to sell horses... where else would I get them?
Most people can, and I don't fear my judgment to the buyer I choose, I worry for who ~they'll~ sell to. I just know that horses change hands sometimes many times in a life. And that isn't an altogether bad thing, as their best-suited job can and should change over a long life.
