The man has given his heart for a dog to tear... :~D
;'). Ever see BudBall?
No, what is it?
It's a kid flick and actually called "Airball" about a dog named Buddy. Lot's of cute scenes about saving him from his "owner". To me, the strays more lovable. Pet Store animals seem to expect a certain level of care but the abandoned ones seem "grateful" or something. Just goes for dogs though. Cats believe they were put here for us to serve them, regardless of where they came from IMO:')
arent you cheerful this morning! No good mornings...............just a look at this awful weather link! I hope you all are not affected......and Good morning to everyone!
Good morning.
Raining, rained all night. I am going to take my camera with me to town today. I know Snake Creek is flooding. It was almost out of it's banks last night when I came home. We don't live where it could get in our house, just where some of the roads will go underwater and we have to go around another way. It's a very deep creek bed so when it's out there is alot of water rolling by.
Of course Bixby is in a flood zone. Probably Half the town is under water this morning.
Becky
Good Morning to you too. Thanks for the link. Cleveland Hopkins Airport has cancelled flights today. It's from the ice, more so, than any amount of snow. I always look at the bright side of winter. I don't have to mow the grass, and there are no bugs.
Morning.
Glad you're up high... Yes, take some pictures!
I pulled on my boots to feed just now and it reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask.
What is everyone's gut reaction to spurs?
Everytime I have shown Harley, I've been questioned about my spurs. I use spurs all the time. They just stay on my boots all the time unless I'm on the bike (can't scratch the bike:).
Anyway, it has seemed to me that there are two reactions, (1) I'm mean to use spurs or (2) the horse must have problems if you need spurs to ride with.
Your thoughts. I know we've discussed spurs, but we've never really talked about what someone riding with spurs implies to observers. I'm curious, maybe I should not have them on when I'm showing him. He would be fine with or without, but it is easier on my legs to have them.
Becky
I might have asked you too, just as a point of interest, whether he ~needed~ spurs... much like I asked if Cyn really ~needed~ the moderately severe bit they were using on her. I don't think it would discourage their interest. They'll probably believe your answer and it will end with that.
But I do know people like my friend Bob who just wear them all the time too.
If a horse "needs" them, do you consider that bad? a problem? Would you use spurs, would you buy a horse that "needs" them?
Becky
Personally, I would be more inclined to stay away from a horse that "needed" a severe bit (I realize Cyn doesn't), then if they needed spurs.
Becky
I am not in the habit of wearing them, and don't know if I'd want to. I've worn them before and found them a pain, that the english ones don't stay in place.
If I were buying the horse, I'd be riding him right after you, probably dressed as I am without them. It'd depend on how that went and the horse's basic personality. I'd find out if you just like the extra responsiveness you get with them on, or if I'd have to thump on them to get them to move at all without them. I wouldn't want a horse that had to be prodded onward because he was extraordinarily lazy. Even for Bruce, that makes for a hard horse to learn on.
Especially for a new rider... a slow accelerator is better than bad brakes ;~D
I'm not sure tho, when you tell people yes you need them on this horse. I have needed them on occassion for all horses. Out on a trail if a horse sees something they don't want to pass, (and that happens with all horses, espeically if they are out by themselves) you "need" them. But then I'm not talking about poking holes in the horse, just the extra pressure you get from a spur.
I remember one horse in particular. I had always rode him in spurs. One day I left with out them. Got to the back of my property and he just was not going any further. I tried, I was kicking the crap out of him with my heels. He just wasn't going. Went back got my spurs. He stopped at the same place but one firm tap with the spur, and on he went. Does this horse "need" spurs? How do you handle that without a spur?
What is more humane in this senario?
Becky
I agree, a horse that won't move at all without is a problem.
Rocky is lazy, and knows when someone doesn't have them. He'll slow way down. With spurs he just needs to be tapped with them occasionally, and he moves along fine.
Becky
If that's the need, I'd just say to them that the spurs give you another tool to work with if they balk to go on trail.
I would think if you always ride without them and suddenly they realize you don't have them, they might test you. If it were me and I were trying to get over that, I'd be more prone to carry a crop with that horse for awhile, neither is more or less humane, depends on how and when they are used. And I'd be more likely to give a crop to ecurbh than I would spurs. You can't accidently use a crop at a bad moment trying to hang on. ;~D
