The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

well, we have two people interested in Lightning (our stallion) and this one would be one that I could ride.
Our trainer is also going to be welcome to come here and ride him : )
This is all pie in the sky right now.............but knowing Tim, if he says he is a great horse........then he is. His other two horses do not rate so highly, in fact one of them (his favorite) is extremly head strong and a challenge. We are not even going there with that one~

The offer happenned today, so we are not even sure we are interested..................
I am hoping also to get more help here with FIL and MIL, DJs brother and sister are of no use so we need to look elsewhere. Hopefully we will have more time soon : )

Yes, several but my favorites are Blessed are the Foals by M. Phyllis Lose, VMD and Foal to Five Years by Ann Hyland. I think there's another, Foal to Two Years or maybe it's a later edition of the Foal to Five - that's originally a 1980 book.

He wants me to. He was used to teach children how to ride and is very easy going. However I am not sure we are even going in that direction. Lots of thought (and money) involved.

Ah... I see. Well, I hope you don't take on too much... Selling Lightning might be the best thing, a young horse, let alone a stud, is not the best match for a new horse family, even if he is an easy one.

I was going to say that maybe when the vet is out tomorrow he could geld Lightning... it'd save another farm call charge ;~D

Yes, that would have been an awful problem 'cause the only ones I've ver seen fixed were just turned out to pasture for a year or so first. Not many people have that kind of room or time or money.

Today was not going smoothly. Sarah Lee did not like Eddies saddle. We are way past this but she put up a fuss when I put it on her back and when I cinched. I took Eddie and my fenders off to switch and couldn't get them threaded back trhu the wood (tree?). She decided to be horsey with lunging too. The owner helping me with a new bridle and I look over and Sarah Lee gnawing Eddies blanket. It just wasn't hers. On days like this I have learned from previous experience that it's better to just stay out of the saddle. The trainer couldn't get my straps re-started either so I told her I just wanted to wait until Thur. She just looked at me and told me she would loan me a saddle. I told her, nah, I didn't want another saddle. She told me fine, you need to learn to ride bare back anyway, it will help you. I'm thinking here I was worrying about DH . There is no way but I went and got my blanket. She told me you won't need that. I'm thinking I'm in big trouble but I climbed the rail and stepped on and grabbed the mane. She told me to get my hands off the mane. big gulp. She walked holding the lead rope about 15 minutes. I told her that maybe next time she could let the rope go. She said why not now. Oops! I did good though as long as I talked. Her, the horse, just talk. Just God, me , and the horse:')

A routine prenatal check a good idea IMO anyway. Hope for the best. If everything ok, then you know.

Why did you want to switch them?

Glad you ended up having a successful ride bareback!

Ok, I'll send it tomorrow. You'll like it. It's fairly long for a video clip. I hope I can send it back out coz our server has a size limit on outgoing e-mails. I haven't tried to send it to anybody else, so we'll see I guess. It's gonna really piss me off if I can't send it. If I can't I may get the girl who sent it to me to send it to you if that's ok.

That's the problem at our house. RoS is the official worrier at our house. Myself, I believe that, if you're worrying, you're butting into God's business. I never worry, she never stops!

No actually I didn't. I just wanted to say not today and go home. I had fun though. I thought she would be uncomfortable but she wasn't. I know I'll probally get some teasing here but I could feel everything she was doing and it was awesome. Getting off kind of ugly though:') I had to have help getting my right leg over and then when I got off I couldn't straighten for a few seconds and walking around in a half squat.

Shes normally standing up by the workshop at this time of the night, with her back end against it, right now, she is laying down on the straw I put out, so I am going to go out and check she is ok..............quietly.
