Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Towards the end of my time with him, I always rode with a tie down, because he did bash me in the face a few times. Once I put the tie down on and he hit it a few times, he never came up again, then it was always down, or to the side. That tells me he was a very smart horse, and just rebelling in a way he could.
I thought about putting his neck in a steel brace:)

Hmmm.... strange predicament... Everything I'd suggest, you already did. Did the new lady get him over it? or do you know?
Strange! Maybe he had a neurological problem or something. I don't know if horses can get something like Tourette's or not, but he may have just been wired up funny.
That's kind of a funny thing. This lady is a really nice lady. I like her alot. I met her thru CTR's. She's a heavy duty competitor. The year I had him I rode alot with her, so she knew about his problem. The thing is...this lady is basically a drunk. Half the time she has no clue what's going on. When I would talk to her on the phone or e-mails, she always said he wasn't doing it. But every time I saw her with him, he was still twitching away:). I don't think she noticed.
She did sell him to someone. I didn't ask alot of questions about what she told or didn't tell about him. But when she sold him, he was still doing it.

Well, if you posted that, you would see us come through cyberspace when we found out you were joking :) Glad to hear everything is okay.
But wouldn't he have then done that when he wasn't being rode. I sat and watched that horse for hours out in the pasture, never did it.
Only when being asked to work, riding or lunging.

Thanks! I think it may be my ISP. Even though I'm at home, I'm hooked up to the internet through the computer at work (too cheap to get my own connection) and they have some site filters that won't let you connect to some servers that have "objectional sites" on them, even though the site you're visiting isn't one of those. That's my guess anyways.
How did you do bareback?
ROTFL!
That was going to be my next question! I got distracted at "I messed up both saddles".
I kina of thought thata would have been the case! : )
My trainer has just called ( about the horse DJ mentioned earlier) and I told him I had called out the vet and he was happy to hear that. He hoped nothing was wrong, but she looked different from what he has seen and although she doesnt appear to be in anything but an uncomfortable state due to her being so close, it was a good idea to have her checked.
BTW the horse DJ mentioned is apparantly a pussycat. He has been used to teach children and is great. No hang ups!
I've run into horses before that were trained too young (two year old futurities) and to hard that just snapped. The only cure I know is just give them time to be a horse, laying around and then ride a totally different discipline with no pressure on them. It's like they have a nervous breakdown.
Yeah, you're right. If it was something neurological he would've done it all the time. But SOMETHING was bothering him and that's just the way he expressed it. It's just a shame nobody could find out what it was.
I realize you take on more in a day than I do in a week, but do you have room and time for another horse right now? Just curious.... it's a surprising development!
oh..........that is so sad : (
Talking about training, although we have our trainer, is ther a really extra good, helpful book on working with foals?
You go ride him before you get him. The term pussycat has many meanings :) depending on wht horseman you're talking to.
There's alot more to this story too. The ladies I bought him from are good friends to the lady I sold him too. I really think they all thought I did something to him to cause it. But the lady I sold him to, I think, liked me too, and traded for him to try to smooth things out for all of us.
The ladies I bought him from (he's the first horse I got after Belle, so my confidence was low) told me they would help with any problems I had. When the problem started, they bailed. I was stuck. I tried several times to get them to just come see what he was doing and advise. I did not want my money back, or for them to train on him anymore. I just wanted some advise. It turned into a mess.
After I sold him and they saw what he was doing I think they changed their tune and were sorry about what happened.
The reason I think it was because of their training is after I bought him, I heard some things from them that told me he was a very stubborn horse. They had to pull him down for sulling up, they had to really really work hard to get his head set.

Oh Hair! I've been meaning to ask you and keep forgetting. Is there any way we can post video clips on here? I got the cutest clip in an e-mail the other day about a little white horse named Patches. It's so cute and I'd love ya'll to see it.
Yeah, I think that was the problem with him. But I didn't have another horse, and I just wanted to ride.

You'd have to be able to load it to a website and post a link to it. Is it online somewhere or was it an attachment?
