The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hair I can't believe you've never been in a WM. Do they just not have 'em out there or what? My BIL thinks they are the Great Satan and will not go there. But I know he does and just doesn't want anybody to know. Kinda like a Baptist at the liquor store. ;o) Just joking!!

One went in here about a year ago... But I don't ever want to go in it ;~D

OH..COME..ON..NOW!! I know you're just baiting me. Wal-Marts are like black holes, there's no way you can stay out of one within 20 miles of your house if your life depended on it. All I have to do is drive by one and $50 just FLIES out of my wallet!

I read it as an overo is white with dark spots and the other is a dark horse with white spots

I know that's what happens. People go in there and end up compelled to buy a gallon jug of pickles for $2.97, even though they don't eat that many pickles in ten years.

I hate even going to town.... I hate to shop, I can easily resist Walmart!

LOL i can remember my first experience in a Walmart 4 years ago. I think I just stood there with my jaw slack and mouth open! It was huge to me. I had been used to seperate little shope like chemsits/bakers/ironmongers/greengrocers/butchers........and here was everything under one roof. I hate shopping too and after 30 mins of "awe" told DJ i needed to get "out of there" and get some air! LOL

I didn't think I could hate one either. I've seen/owned very few that I didn't like.

I think one of the reasons I hated him was because he was so beautiful.

He twitched:) Bad. His head. A girl who saw him nick named him Stevey Wonder.

He's also the horse I pulled down for sulling up.

IMO, he was just a brat who didn't want to work.

But he threw his head around sooooooooooooo bad, up, down, sidewise, every way, in a very jerky manner, ALL THE TIME you were riding him. NEVER when you weren't. It wasn't a normal head tosser, it was very jerky, hard on the riders arms. I tried EVERY kind of bit, no bit, tie downs, no tie down, bungy cords. I had a trainer look at him, he had never seen one do it. I had the vet check his teeth/mouth nothing.

IMO, the horse just did not want to work. The people I got him from had trained him for Western Pleasure, but had only put 60 days trainingin him, they did their own training. When he wasn't twitching he had a beautiful head set. The girl who trained him tho, said she really had to work on him to get him to do it. I think she put too much stress on him for that head set. He had never been rode for long lenghts of time when I got him. I think the long lengths of time I put on him, even tho I wasn't asking for his beautiful head set, stressed him because he didn't know I didn't worry about that head set. His response to the stress was to twitch. Does that make sense. He was 4 when I got him. I kept him a year. And in that year I rode him almost every day trying to get him over it. It didn't start till about 3-4 weeks after I brought him home. When it first started I thought for awhile he was twitching flies off his face. But then fly season ended but the twitching continued.

I did think I had him over it once, but that was when he sulled up. I did break him of doing that.

The girl I traded him to for Rusty, just knew she could get him over it. She thought I was too heavy handed with him. And at the end I was, but that is what the trainer who I had look at him told me to do. Just hold his head down with brute force, but I couldn't really. She never got him over it either.

Becky

Cool picture, except for the tacky WM right in the middle of it.

My FIL is that way about buying huge quantities of stuff. He bought a GALLON JUG of Mayonnaise for Pete's sake. I get that way sometimes myself. My innate cheapness just fights it's way to the surface and I have to buy it even though I know I won't use it. But I'm a shopaholic too. I'll go to WM when I don't even need anything and just cruise the isles just to see what they've got. That's the main reason I've avoided even LOOKING at e-Bay. I'm afraid my credit card might not survive the experience.

I cant believe you just go to cruise the isles! LOL I wish you lived nearby and could do my ghastly grocery shopping for me! I am so relieved when I have got it done and can get home and put my feet up with a cup of coffee.

How did you mess up the saddles? Did you read my post where i am getting a bareback pad for $10! I am going to get DJ to lead reign me (like a baby) round the pasture so that i can learn to control my movements and balance. (when the mares are fit enough).

One of my mares tosses her head like that (if that's what you meant by twitching) when I'm riding her. I think her problem is her hair tickling her ears as we go forward. When I rubber-band her forelock down and stick it under her browband, she pretty much quits.

Okie is the overo.

Then they both are.... Post a picture of him where you can see his color. SL doesn't have any white that crosses her spine does she? There's lots of other little complicated definitions, but that is the key.

Overos do not have white splotches that cross the spine, Tobianos do, and Toveros are a combination of both ideas, where they are solid, but white, over the spine from head to tail.

I even tried that.

He's head tossing was a violent jerk. either up, or down, or to the side. I came home sometimes with green splotches on my pant leg from him bumping his mouth into my leg.

When I first started holding his head down as the trainer told me, (this was after the sulling up was cured), it seemed to start helping one day. Another girl was with me. I was really concentrating on him, we weren't talking much. But he went for about 10 minutes with out doing it, and she said, maybe he's got the idea. I told her, maybe, but he may try something else now. Guess what:), he suddenly slammed on the brakes and went flying backwards. We crashed into her.

I started spurring him really hard. Hard enought to make him fart:). He pulled that stunt about 3 times, then went back to twitching. It seemed the one thing he figured he could do, and I could come back with anything to make him stop. You can only hold a twitching horse head down for so long before your arms give out.

Becky
