The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Looking at her from the side, like you've drawn. A tire shape under her belly? Plus the shape at the sides from the back where her side comes down and the bulges out or a bulge under like if you looked at her tail - between her legs?

Is the tire standing up or laying flat?

all i did was copy a drawing of a horse and draw the tire shape! The rest is not my handywork!
But yes, she does have that prominant bulge underneath what i would consider her pregnant belly. It is very different from how Mistys was.
Confusing? Sorry : }

I could not remember who had the "Medicine Hat". Glad you posted that pic. I was wondering how your were doing with him. Good Luck with the new colt. He's very pretty.

sort of? her belly looks like that (as big as that) and then she has this "tire" shape underneath.

To me, it looks as though the foal has dropped low in her belly. I'm not sure it looks like a tire to me, but I can't think another way to describe it. I'm not sure that there is a problem, because she does not appear to be in any pain, just the usual discomfort of carrying around a horse in your belly : ' }

FWIW, that does not look like a ventral rupture to me... It's not large enough of a hernia to contain the foal in it.

There is a soft swelling that appears under the belly sometimes, but I can't for the life of me come up with an example in Google. Does it feel like it is soft and full of fluid?

I think the bottom left picture is more like it, although the top picture is close as well. The darker color makes it harder to see.

OK, the tire is in the middle of the belly and then the prominent bulge is below that and then you have groove just underneath the prominent bulge that is the groove in the W and its is running from front to back.

Close?

TIm ( our trainer/farrier) described it as looking like she had a "tire" in her belly. DJ is right though, she only appears uncomfortable, not in pain. What is also weird is that looking at her from her rear end, you lift up the tail and there is an obvious soft W shape that her belly shows. A big dip in the middle, not just a vein. I think this was one of the reasons our trainer thought it might be a good idea to call the vet. He didnt seem to think she was in pain , just uncomfortable, like she was about to have it soon! LOL

I can not draw a picture with words myself, so I understand the problem. As a mare gets ready to foal, the baby moves from sticking out on the sides or the bottom of the sides to a position where the belly points to the ground so to speak. The baby has turned and instead of laying comfortably (for it), it then has it's front feet and nose in the birth canal. It's rump is that bulge hanging down.
