The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Can you draw? even a cartoon version of the shape of what you see and where the 'tire' is? If you can, and could email it to me, I'd post it. Hairofthedog@freerepublic.com

She is wider but its all at the bottom like the photo. She also has that dip in the middle. Its quite pronounced and the best way to describe it is, when you look at her, lift her tail and her underneath resembles a Soft W. In the top photo, the belly is right for the first line, but underneath that you have this sagging "tire" shape.

Not to change the subject, but...

Our trainer is, as RoS said earlier, selling his horses, and we are going to look at one of them Thursday (hopefully). He referred to it as an Ovarro (that is the way I heard it, not necessarily the way it is spelled). I didn't know what that was, but assumed it was the breed. I later tried to look it up in my horse books, but couldn't find any reference to it, and a Google search didn't help either. Does anyone have any ideas what that is?

Computer question???

How in the world do you send a drawing by e-mail. I don't understand how you could do that, but not be able to post pictures?

I'd say he is speaking of an "overo" paint.

There are two types of paints, Overo, and tobiano. I get them mixed up on which is which, but it has to do with the markings they have.

I believe a tobiano will have a dark face and chest and bigger spots, and overo will have a white face and more splashy looking spots. I could be wrong about which is which tho.

Paint horses ALWAYS come from quarter horse stock. Pinto horses can be any breed.

If she either has drawing program on her computer like MS Paint she can draw it that way (though it's hard to draw with the mouse pen), sortof like I drew the lines on our horses when we were talking about conformation.

OR, if she has a scanner, she can draw it by hand and scan it.

The reason she can't post photos from her camera (from what I understand), is that the camera got dropped and though it still works, the corner of the camera where it plugs in to the USB port is damaged. She needs to get a card reader that lets her take the disk card out of her camera and read the card directly. The card reader bypasses the part on her camera that's broken.

Thanks. It just goes to show that Free Republic is a better source of information than Google!

I was just going to ask a really stupid question when duh, I figured it out. I was thinking if she could draw and scan, why could she take a picture and scan. Pictures do have to be develop first tho, don't they, before you can scan:)

Much better idea :) If necessary print out that picture and draw in the differences.

Well I did get those pictures from google:)

Sometimes the markings are so subtle it's hard to say which they are.

I don't know if Pinto's have the two distinctions.

Personally, I've always like the overo's best, but most people like the Tobianos. Overo's are more prone to having 1 or both eyes blue, which I don't care for so much, but I think overo's markings are alot more interesting.

Well.... We've have an exciting "horse" day here. The Colt arrived! We had planned to have him moved tomorrow - but at last minute - he called and said could he bring him today. I said , "What time today" - he said "Oh, about RIght Now!!!". We scurred out to get the other horses -

The guy who brought him (also brought along his mom for support) reminded us that 2 of our horses were pastured with the colt for several months - he thought he would do better if we put him with them after the took the mother away. So we did.... They are doing great. He made his "baby mouth" at them... they showed him around the pasture - they all have been standing in barn with no bad behavior. He is wearing a halter for the first time.

He needs a lot of cosmetic care - he seems to have not ever been groomed - has horrible flakey skin (maybe rain rot).... but he does like to be brushed - so hopefully dd can get him in ship shape condition soon.

Here are a couple of pictures.....

His first halter experience!

Already in love!

She has no doubts she can do this.....

That 's it for today... Thanks for looking at all these photos!! And for sharing our excitement!

Overo means the color does not cross the spine. Becky posted an Overo above.

The other kind, Tobiano, the color splotches ~do~ cross the spine.

Tobiano

Incidentally, in a third kind, "TOVERO", the color doesn't cross the spine, but the color is white.

Cindy's Sarah Lee is Overo... I don't remember

The lethal white come from palaminos, buckskins, not paints.

If you bred two palaminos, two buckskins, or a buckskin to a palamino, you run a big risk of getting an albino.

Looking at them together, I have no doubts that she can do it. What did she name him?

He's a really pretty little guy! I am glad it went well, they will remember old pasture buddies, I am glad the introduction worked without a hitch!

Your daughter looks great with him!

Thanks for the vote of confidence.... Naming animals around here takes DAYS... sometimes weeks!! She wants a dark "night" type name - they have been calling him "Rainey" because he was born in a terrrible storm - She wants to change it - I thought the little white on his forehead looked like a crescent "Moon"... but she isn't sure of that one - Any ideas I will pass along ....
