Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Yeah we have 7' snow drifts too. Had no problems with power either. All in all it wasn't bad, just the wind and the snow.
Take pictures of her if you can.... so that even if we can't see it now, we can see it later and say "oh, I see it now".
Dear Rose, this is good natured ribbing now... you have got to get on board with the ability to load pics! You're driving us crazy not being able to see! :~D
Two years ago (before husband retired) I had the stall camera showing up on a tv by my computer, and my computer video cam pointed at it. Then I set it up on the internet so I could watch my mare from work.

Bay got up a sweat yesterday just walkin' around with me. I ~know~ you are in better shape than we are.
And Cyn sweat in the girth too. I've been mildly worried (because of Rusty) about her not sweating much on that hard ride last October. Everyone was wet except her. I've never known a horse for whom not sweating was a problem until meeting you. She never showed any other signs of being hot, concern has just been whispering in the back of my mind.

She's probably fine, given her breeding. Rusty's problems, from what I have learned are pretty rare. Most people I have talked to about it, people who have been around horses their whole lives, had never heard of it. (Alot think I'm just crazy and imagine it:) They had to see it to believe.
But just to ease your mind watch her respiration. As long as the respiration is OK, she's OK. One old timer who had heard of it told me horses like Rusty have a nick name. "Puffers" because of their rapid panting like respiration. So that type of respiration is a clue that to what the problem is. That was actually the symptom I noticed first in Rusty, then did research and THEN caught on that he wasn't sweating.

She didn't have an increased respiration either.... she didn't ~feel~ hot, she just acted like it was a walk in the park, and was dry, though Bay's whole chest was wet.
Bay blows hard when the girls get him running hard... He'll stop and his sides will just heave while he catches his breath. he's too old and out of shape for a lot of runnin hard. Is that what Rusty does?
sorry so long had to see to MIL. Sugar does have the line running from front to back which is noticbely higher than the "tire" shape. I am concerned that she has got to the point of foaling and something is wrong. I am glad the vet is coming tommorow. He is coming our time (eastern, it is now 3.43pm) tommorow between 9 and 10 am
As for the camera, I can only get away from the house on a friday morning when my friend comes in to help nurse Mama. Otherwise i cant leave. It gives me enough time to do a weekly grocery shop and not much else. (i drive 40 miles to the shops). I hope to get to office depot soon though : ) Its frustrating not being able to post what i am talking about!
Rusty's is not what I would call "heaving". It's fast, short, breaths. When I was riding him, I could feel him puffing. Just like an over heated dog would pant.

Ok, Harley saddled. I'm off again.
Poor guy tho. I've been letting him and Rusty run together a little every day, and he's got bite marks ALL over him. One, on his hip is sore to the touch. All the others are just the hair scraped off. You can't really see them because of his winter coat. I noticed them while grooming. He really flinched when I brushed over that one.
I didn't realize Rusty was such a bully.

A large vein running back along her belly is very normal. That grey percheron mare in the rupture pic has one, but that is not the problem. Do you see that in Misty? And is that different than the crease you see?
Well, those two play pretty rough in the pics you posted... our mares posture and rear at each other, but rarely make any contact... So Harley doesn't get any licks in on Rusty? It looked mutual in the pics of them runnin.
Thanks, now I know to be on from 12-2pm my time. We will expect an immediate report :) He's probably going to say everything's fine, stop paying attention to those **&^%$ women on the internet. Still, better to check and know than to have a problem you don't know about.
LOL you have met my vet havent you! LOL He is really good and free with advice, but i wish he was coming today. As far as the line, its not so much a vein as an indent (about an inch deep) seperating the "tire" like shape.
Maybe because i have called the vet out, she will foal tonight and be fine : ) (i hope!)
We had thought she would foal before now, and this weekend we have some distant relatives coming to give us a break and we are heading to the blue ridge for 2 nights. I hope everything is going to be ok to go! I havent had a break from 24/7 nursing (apart from groceries) since September!
Try not too worry too much if you can. Your vet will be there tomorrow. If things change then you can call him and tell him to "get here now".:') I'm fixing to get out of here in about 30 minutes. I have a riding lesson at 5 and it takes me an hour at least to get ready:'(. I'm switching saddles today and will probably like it better once I'm used to it but I hate horse changes:')
