Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Good morning.
Becky
Mornin'.
Wonder if we have a baby this morning.
Hope so, for Rose's sake:) There's nothing harder then waiting.
I find out Wed. if my mare is still in foal, then my waiting starts if she is.
Becky
Good mornin'! Brrrr and no school again for our kiddies. (3*/-8* w.c.)
Morning. Yeah, I just look at all these plans for ideas. It's kept in the barn here but it's mostly metal and all the stalls have outside gates plus 4 barn doors.
morning
It really is fun reading about each days wait. I used to work for the phone company (years ago), I was a directory assistance operator and worked with a BUNCH of women. With that many women, there was always somebody pregnant and it was fun waiting for the big day.
Don't have any pregnant friends anymore so I guess I have to just wait for friends horses to give birth...
You can sure get lots of good ideas on here. I did see that someone had a mare/baby stall and that's a good idea, too. I have a wall between 2 of my stalls that is actually a big door. It opens and latches to the wall for a mare/baby stall.
Yeah, it is a nail biting kind of fun:) It's hard enough to wait for something that you know when it for sure will happen, but babies/foals...aahhh...I get crazy:)
The last time my mare foaled, I remeber the night it happened, I was surprised it really did happen:) It was a funny odd sensation.
Becky
You're right, it is a funny sensation. One minute you have one horse, the next minute, you have 2. It's amazing.
When Juma was born I got the night correct. I put the mare up in a pen near the house so I could see her from my bedroom window. I left the barn lights on, too. The mare was going nuts wanting to get to the other horses and something just told me all that running around was gonna kick the process into high gear. About 1 or 2 in the morning I got up and looked out my window and there was a little baby standing there with her. I ran out to see him and the mare's placenta was still hanging and Juma was still wet. The look on Haley's face was priceless. (it was her first baby) It was like she was thinking, "how the heck did that happen?!"
I had a dog once that had a litter of pups. She looked at them fighting to nurse and then me , like "what happened"
I slept in the barn 10 nights with my mare so I would be there. The night it happened, I feed all the horses then climbed into my cot. It was the first night that I was able to pull my cot out into the run rather then being in the stall. I was laying there looking at the stars:)
I suddenly realized Belle was very quiet. She usually made lots of noise while she ate. I got up and looked at her. She was standing there with her nose in the feed bucket but not eating, as I leaned down to see what she was doing I put my hand on her shoulder. She was sweating.
I went to the house got Mack called the kids, and it was barely 45 minutes later that she had it. The coolest thing was right after Dot came, Belle, still laying down looked back and "talked" to Dot. She made this sound that I'd never heard before or since, just a rumble in her throat that sounded like a tractor trying to start. She only did that about twice. I'd love to know what she said:)
Becky
I've been meaning to ask/tell you. Did you know that there is a link on the FR Homepage to this thread?
Mack showed it to me just last week.
Becky
Good Morning!
One degree here.....miserable!
I didn't know we were a real daily thread! I never even asked! Cool!
Good morning everyone!
Bay is really tall... Vet thought he must be Arab and TB... nope... just Arab. The Polish blood horses are bigger.
I just talked to my farrier, he'll be here in the morning.
Becky

Becky
