Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
OK - with dirt you can save the money it would cost for rubber mats, though it's really nice to have rubber mats even on a dirt floor. Is damp an issue down there in the hay area?
I think deaconjim has left for home! (he was posting from work). As for damp. We havent had a problem with damp. We dont store much at the moment and make at least once a week trips to our feed and supply place. We then buy in bulk for all of our animals! I think we keep the place in business : )
I got her timing wrong before, but am backed up by "qualified" people now! LOL I am very nervous now as she is HUGE. Much much bigger than Misty was and as she is my favourite (i know I shouldnt really have one.....) I just long for her to foal and for both Mom and foal to be healthy. Also I am still keeping post and watching her through the night and I am getting a little sleepy! LOL
I'm impressed! One thing that really stands out is the good idea of making the wall between 2 12x12 stalls swing back to enable a mother and foal stall.........or just more room. Great!
Thanks
Is your alley wide enough for vehicles? I noticed that Tuffydoodle said her's was. Where do you store your hay?
I also like the "camera"! I need one!
It's set up is for foaling although we only use it that way every couple of years.
The alleyway is 12ft wide. We drive trucks and the tractor through it. We store the hay seperately and just keep about four bales in the barn 'cause I worry about fire.
It got really cold and tiring getting up and going out every hour :) I still get up every hour but all I have to do now is look at the monitor.
Night all
well we are not planning on any more foaling. Due to inexperience, we are having our foals born now.......If I had known more, or had had the time to different, it would be later if any. However, we have a beautiful little ADGE that is now the splitting image of Lightning!
Our friends were moving into town and needed to sell the horses quickly, so we struggled to enclose a 3 acre field for them in two nights with earth as hard as concrete! Guess we didnt think about nature taking its course!
Your barn looks great, and i hope to get a really good layout in ours too. One things great about this website is that we can pick at all your experienced brains so that we can do things better than we would have done! : ) Thankyou!
Night : )
Night
Well its 11:45 pm here and I am tired, so I shall go and see to the animals and horses and check out the hot tub and then hopefully to bed!
Goodnight all. Thanks for all your help and advice.
Sharn
I don't see where you had any choice in the matter :)
Good night
Brrrrrrrrr! Your February sounds cold! We are often in shorts then!
We end up with our animals cause I cant say no, and I do my best for them. I make sure they are fed and watered and loved.
As for the horses, well Misty did fine, Sugar has foaled before and I pray she does ok too, but I do worry.
As for getting them when we did, I just knew that we had enough land for them and hey presto!
Have a good evening!
Night.
Mornin' all.
Cindy, Duchess is right, hay can be a fire hazard but I rarely buy more than 10 bales at a time since I only use it when the weather is bad or a horse is sick or lame and needs to stay in. That's why I don't have a problem storing it at my barn. If my barn was all wood then I'm not sure what I would do. Only my stalls and tack room are wood.
Bay looks very tall and your husband fits him really well.
They both look like they are having a great time.
