Thread Four: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1332664/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I keep getting more and more amazed at ecurbh's ability and courage... He just decided to kick Bay up and canter on about his third ride, when I was just barely able to not nervously bite my nails watching him trot very far away from me. ;~D
So... There's a cautious, risk free existence, or there is really living to your fullest. Trust your inner voice... ;~D
How many horses are you designing it for, and does hay and bedding have to be stored in this building too? Do you expect you will close them in to stalls, or do you want them to have cover they can freely access from paddocks?
Should I have said "...unless your inner voice is talking crazy talk!"?
At the moment, there are 4 and soon to be 5. I don't think we will keep that many, probably 3. I do need room to store bedding and hay, and I want to be able to stall them, but most of the time they will just need shelter.
Maybe I just didn't know enough to be afraid. ;~) But being cautious will only take you so far in life. There are times you just have to just have to go for it... like quitting your job, breaking a lease and moving halfway across the country for true love.
Makes a big difference:) That's why I think kids do so well. Why I "use" to ride in parades, but won't now:)

We don't have a garage, so all our tools need to be in there too, or we'd have more room for hay, less for tools.
You could lay it out with three stalls like this, or you could lay it out with one 12X12 for Lightning, with the mares sharing a 12X24 open loafing shed.
I like the 'after' version. That's about what I had in mind. I do have a workshop to keep the tools in, but a place to park the tractor would be good, maybe a lean-to on the side.
If you end up keeping either of those babies, you can squeeze more stalls or another loafing shed out of this design, with runs off the other side of the barn. You can't store more than a few-month supply of hay in a 12X12 space though, and that turns into a few weeks supply with five. ;~D Depends on how often you want to run to the feed store ;~D
Since we are a family of 5, there is hope that we will have 5 horses as well. Since Tommy is not quite 3 yet, it may be awhile before we need to reach that point. Hopefully, by the time he's ready for his own horse, we'll have the 50 acres in the mountains with a brand new barn to be built.
Yes, hopefully by then you will be on Farm 2.0.
Does the building have a concrete floor in it or dirt?
I should say, ours are either closed in or out of the stalls, it's hard to see in that pic, but there are gates on each stall that stay closed when they are out. With multiple horses, they either have to have a wide loafing shed where they can't get trapped and kicked, or they have to be closed in or out of small stalls.
Anyone ever tell you that you are a sweetheart? If not, consider it said :)
forever...........well it seems that way! Our trainer/farrier says it will be any day. Its cold tonight so it will probably happen. : )
~smiles over at her honey~
I was thinking tonight too.Cold and a full moon. I used to work in an ER on nights. Statistics don't back it up but you would never convience me that more babies aren't born.
way to go ecurbh! I moved accross the Atlantic for deaconjim!
As for the canter........well done! I have made Sugar canter too! It just felt right at the time, nerve racking but we both wanted it! I didnt fall off and she seemed to enjoy herself, so smiles all round!
