The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh man, there's tons of stuff on the internet about tornadoes. Pictures, videos and graphic descriptions from storm chasers. The worst one I've seen was the one in Jarrell, Texas. An F5, it leveled the town to the point that you didn't even know there was a town there. It even pulled the pavement up off the roads.

Ok, I've been studying the feed through fly control product called Equitrol and I don't think I'll be using that one. In vet studies at UCDavis it shows there is a significant behavior change in horses taking Equitrol. In "The Horse" magazine, someone sued Farnam over Equitrol and they won a multimillion dollar lawsuit.

We had bees a couple of weeks ago. Horses and bees:'(
I read that three times as "We had beers a couple of weeks ago. Horses and beers." I almost responded: Hey, that's great! It's warm enough to ride and have a cold beer at the same time!

Well, I be hesitant to use any kind of "feed-thru" posions (unless maybe to get a mulit=million dollar suit:). From what my vet told me, those kind of things are hard on their livers.

LOL
I have a permanently lame horse here, perhaps I should sacrifice him for a lawsuit.

Off the Subject but does anyone know how much (roughly) a 30x36 Morton barn would cost with two stalls. I just need a rough idea is it $20,000-$30,000-$10000? I obviously have no idea

I would think in the ten thousand range, give or take. I have a 5 stall metal barn with a tack room and outdoor wash rack, all on a cement slab (except for stalls) and I'm thinking we paid about $30,000 for it. If I can get ahold of my husband I'll find out exactly how much it was and let you know.

Morton buildings are ridiculisly over priced. Most lumber yards can put up a building just as nice for alot less. Shop around.

Kentucky is good and so is Tennessee.

Temps here just dropped 11 degrees in a couple of hours with winds gusting to 30 mph. From 54 and partly cloudy to 43 and overcast. Did not take me long to feed the livestock this morning. Also made sure all the water tanks were topped off.

If FrogInABlender is riding this morning, both her and her horse will be aired out by the time they get back home..... : )

I honestly don't know. I'll ask my husband. I also have awnings on all 4 sides and I sure like them. We added them as an afterthought and I'm glad we did. My kids play under there while I'm working, I store equipment under there and also hay.

Ok, this is what I found out. Not including the awnings it's approximately 36 by 40. My barn aisle is wide enough for me to pull a truck and trailer through, something I do if it looks like it's gonna hail, so my stuff doesn't get tore up. My husband couldn't remember exactly what we paid for it because we added on alot of extras along the way but he thought it wasn't any more than 30 grand and probably a little less than that. He also said those Morton barns are way overpriced. I had a barn builder here in my town build mine.
