Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Anyone ELSE longing for spring yet?
We're HAVING spring... Up here in the NW, it's unseasonably warm and muggy out, and last night I heard frogs.
Wow! from that ice storm Central Ohio had a few weeks ago? Or something else? I know some, didn't get power restored, for almost a week after that last one.
Kids have been home MORE than being in school. They'll probably be home tomorrow again. They're calling for @ 4-6" snow mixed with freezing rain.
Town is STILL partially flooded.
The ONLY ones not complainin' are the horses. They play and romp through the snow and cold like little kids. Too funny!
Nah...from flooding then disgustingly freezing temps.
Central Ohio is still having icing problems though. The twins have on-line school based up there. And their phone/power lines in the Marion area are sporadic at best.
We are having the start of a beautiful day here, 42 now, sun shining bright, light wind.
And my horses feet are still not done:(

Days like we are having today actually make winter worse. Get a little taste, and then it goes back to winter weather....makes it hard to enjoy, when you know it's not going to last.
Everyone around here goes around on days like this, saying "you think we could be done with winter for the year..I hope so" when they KNOW, winter is not nearly done with us yet:)

You oughta try to get your farrier to schedule his return before he leaves... ours does... he stays on schedule and we never have to wait for him to get out here when they're due.
I am the only one here, I think, wishing the weather would be more winter-like... it ain't normal for us to not have any snow, some years I'm not ready for it, but this year I AM!
All my horses manes to that, some worse than others. I've wondered that myself, but just never took the time to try and do anything about it. You might could oil it and band it, but I don't know how long you'd have to leave it in there for it to stay.
It's not the snow that gets to me...it's this bitter cold. Just walking from the house to the car gives one krinkly nose hairs and frozen eyeballs. LOL! (brrr)
God willing, NEXT year my wings will grow and I WILL migrate.(hehehe)
Well, I do that, but this time we had to cancel because of bad weather, then on our reschedule date, his truck broke down. He told me as soon as the truck is fixed, I'd be first on the list. It was a major break down, bent axle, so I'm trying not to get impatient:)

Well, I don't know if there's ALOT or not, but lots of people seem to have a horse or two out in a field behind their house. I know of 5 or 6 farriers around here and I'm sure there are more. Most of 'em are "shade tree" farriers who learned their craft from another farrier in the area, not by going to any nationally recognized farrier school, but there are some professionally trained ones too. So I guess there may be some healthy competition going on here. I've never done it, but if you're willing to haul to the Amish, they'll do it for $25 a head. You'd have to haul several to make it worth the drive and I live farther from them than I used to.
I had a lady tell me to smear vasoline real heavy on the mane. I just can't get past thinking what a mess that would be tho, to clean up. I've tried bands, and braiding, but it seems that breaks off more hair then it helps.

I've been out getting my burn piles going again. And picking up rocks. I've come up with a plan:) I had to give up mowing out there last year because I hit rocks stuck in the ground two times and bent mower blades. My mower is just 2 years old and I didn't want to risk ruining it completly.
That's one reason I decided this winter I needed to really work on the pasture. It looks/grows so much better if I mow occasionaly, But I DON'T want to pull any more rocks up, but they are hard to see from the mower. There are also places that no matter what I do, I can't take the mower into them. So I am throwing all the small loose rocks into those areas. Then I'm going to get some bright green paint (that will blend with the grass kind of:), paint the top of the rocks the mower can't go over, and outline the areas I shouldn't go in. I can spray those larger areas with diesel too, to keep the weeds and grass from growing so tall, making the pasture look bad.
Probably alot of people could just remember where not to go but it's really hard on a mower, expecially in a large area you can mow, but there is one or two rocks sticking up just high enough that the mower doesn't clear them.

Good morning. Aren't Dobies great :) My girl would eat anything I did - except the tomatoes. She came across country in the cab of a moving truck with me, eating hamburgers at truck stops and drinking out of a coke cup.
She loved riding shotgun and made it her mission to make sure no one came near that truck.
Yeh, it does feel like robbery. :)
You and I are paying about the same I think. I go eight weeks between shoeings.
Now I feel like a real whimp, complaining about my weather. It's 22 degrees this morning with fog again but at least no more snow in the immediate future is forecast.
