The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

My husband usually wakes up in a good mood, singing and wanting to play. I'm grouchy and just want to be left alone to wake up slowly. This morning he just kept on, delibertely yanking my chain, teasing me. He jumped on the bed after me and my elbow slowly came up, as he tried to get in my space. I told him to "quit" :') What works for horses.... He still got his way though. I crawled out of my nice, comfortable bed, which was what he wanted to begin with. I didn't get too far though. Just to the computer!

I gotta show ya'll this picture of "my girls" that I took last night. They have the strangest habit. After everybody has eaten, they like to stand around and lick the hood of my car. It's like they're at a buffet or something. I don't know why they do it, but it makes the most godawful mess you've ever seen...

No, we don't. In fact, I'm getting tired of saying "It's got to be today". I'm guessing late March or early April, or perhaps May. Definitely this year, though.

If she gets any bigger, though, we'll have to think up two names. Do horses have twins?

It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to drive in the pasture to get to the barn every day, so even if I wash it off, it's right back the next evening. And on top of that, Grace, the one on the left, will go lick on the salt block for a while first, then come lick the hood, so all the white stuff you see smeared everywhere is dried up salt, mixed with mud. YUCK!

Occasionally they do have twins. Lets hope not!

The bad part about mine is that I didn't notice they'd lick it for a while and then rake their teeth across it. They really scratched it up.

Yes horses can have twins, but very very seldom do even one of them survive.

I know you probably think I'm nuts:)...but I've got to say this.

IF Sharn really believes that it was labor that she saw the horse doing day before yesterday and yesterday (from her posts it sounds like labor IS a definite possibility) you really need to call a vet. The birth process in horses does not take that long unless there is a problem. Everything I have read and been told, that when labor reaches the pushing stage, it should be at the most an hour. I was truly surprised (and envious:), when my mare had her foal, how quick it went, 15 minutes tops. If the foal is not born in that time, you call the vet.

I don't call the vet at a drop of the hat, either.

If she has been in labor this long the foal is probably dead, and you'll risk losing the mare too if something is not done soon. They get septic infection from haveing a decompossing foal inside.

From my book: "may continue for 12-24 hours During this period the fetus is positioned for delivery and the cervix is dilated. This stage ends with the breaking of the water bag.

The actual birth, stage two is rapid, with most foals born in 20-30 minutes. As the foal is squeezed thrugh the pelvis canal, the umbilical cord becomes compressed and the foal can suffocate if not born quickly.

Please remember, I'm not there to see. I'm basing this on the posts that I've read. So I could be over reacting:)

I'll second your advice... I hate to tell others what to do, but I'd have had the vet out already to make sure everything was OK, and would have called him to ask questions without much hesitation.

It certainly does no harm to just have her checked to see what ~is~ happening.

From my book:

Labor occurs in three distinct stages. In stage one, the mare is restless. She may take a bite of feed, then walk around the stall. Sometimes she goes off feed and will not eat. She may lie down and roll, get up, stomp her hind feet and make a kicking like motiontoward her adomen as if colicky. These signs "may continue for 12-24 hours During this period the fetus is positioned for delivery and the cervix is dilated. This stage ends with the breaking of the water bag.

The actual birth, stage two is rapid, with most foals born in 20-30 minutes. As the foal is squeezed thrugh the pelvis canal, the umbilical cord becomes compressed and the foal can suffocate if not born quickly.

Starting a new thread about farts? Not sure if the board police would tolerate that. I guess to keep in the spirit of this thread we could talk about horse farts.

Do you think horses fart and then try to cover the noise by acting like it was the dog or some other barn noise?

Nah:) Horses enjoy their farts and are proud of them, IMO, why else do they wait till your bent over cleaning their back feet to let one rip:)

When I am walking behind my pony, she can fart with each step and grins. I swear to you, she grins.

Yeah, I was thinking of that too, but they don't bite (so far) they just lick, like they've got a giant popsicle sitting there. I've tried running them off, but they just come right back. I could pull the jeep in the barn I guess, but then it's in my way. Silly mares!

As long as I'm posting pictures of them, here's some more...

Bluebell and 7mth old Hope. Bluebell will foal again in May. They are both blue roan in summer, but they get sunburned hair and get this weird brown color, and their manes bleach out from black to this blonde color. Strange.

Hope. She looks like a little chunk here, but alot if it is wooly winter coat.

Truly, the "Queen Bee", who will foal again in April...

I think what we were seeing was Sugar laying down, and with us not having seen this process before, we're not real sure what to look for. She seems perfectly fine right now, and I don't see anything that makes me think otherwise. This is not her first, so I'm not overly concerned at this point. We can keep a close eye on her where she's at.

Yeah, but I've got no place to put her except with the boys, and Bob, her brother, is a young stallion, so that wouldn't work either. Bluebell's as fat as mud, so I'm not worried about her getting "pulled down". Other than that, I don't know of anything that it hurts by leaving them together, so she'll just have to wean her herself I guess.

Speaking of Bob(the biter) here's a picture of the color change he goes through from summer to winter...

Bob in Summer coat...

Bob in winter coat…

He looks like a different horse.
