The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I was reading an article in a magazine where a guy that trains police horses teaches them to walk over a mattress. At first they went around it, then tried to jump over it, then hurry and finally he gets them to walk on it.

LOL...yeah that's the common response to stuff like that:)

When I did it, I lead them first, IMO, they feel more secure following. Anything you can do to get them use to anything that scares them just makes for a quieter horse. I know some trainers that just start stuff like that riding.

Even if you get them use to whatever leading, they can regress when riding, it just won't get as big a fuss, and they'll, in my experience, go ahead and so it faster.

I was watching a class at the stables Sunday where the kids were learning to show. They had to walk and trot next to their horses. The instructor was talking about training the horse to start with them and that when they stopped to turn towards the horse to teach him to set up. Would this work with a horse wanting to get ahead. I thought I would try it with Sarah Lee to see if she would step back.

You're not gonna believe what I thougt when I first read this. I thought "Man, that's a little much to expect a horse to sit up in a show ring!" LOL!!

I heard on Paul Harvey a while back that somewhere in the UK, sheep had learned to cross cattle gates.....by laying down and rolling across! Now THAT'S something I'd pay to see! Apparently sheep aren't as stupid as they look.

Just pop him in the nose with the lead rope every time he trys to run ahead of you. He will stop.

No, I just read it wrong. I had a picture in my minds eye of a horse sitting up on his butt like a dog.

In the gaited horse shows, they call it "parking out" and in dog shows it's called "stacking up", but setting up sounds just as good.

Well actually she does really good now most of the time and when she doesn't I just turn her in a circle and she stops. I just thoughtit was interesting that on every horse, even though the kids weren't getting it the trainer had them walking with her and stepping back when she turned towards them. Maybe she had popped them on their noses previously:')

Its standard operating practice to train a horse this way, don't beat her just pop her in the nose every time she does that and she will stop, its bullet proof works every time, it should take you about 3 different days to get her to stop.

You shouldn't half to turn her in a circle when she does this, just pop or bump her with end of the lead rope.

That's what I thought too, but it was told on the news for the truth. Like I said, it's something I'd pay to see.

I think you're gonna have to get your mare out and put her on a trampoline or something to get that baby to come out. She's being very uncooperative! ;o)

Tell me about it! Just b4 James went to work, she laid down (like an elephant, shes that big!) and started heaving and puffing and holding one leg up and all the rest.....then she turned round towards the house, got up and had a sip of water! We were sure this was it! We had stayed indoors with binoculars! You should have seen us! LOL What a pair!
Just looked out, shes eating hay now! I think this is a really fun game for her! She is quite a card anyway and has a sense of humor!
wait till dark and i'm in the shower.........thats when it'll happen!

As for the sheep....i would love to see that too! I have vast experience with sheep and lambing and havent come accross one yet that has any inteligence! I am used to cattle grids too and hurt myself as a kid running accross one and getting my shoe caught and busted my ankle. Hate them still today. Very dangerous, especially for children.

Well, according to the book:), it should be now - and Thurs. Have you looked to see what the wax looks like? I've never actually seen one wax. My mare didn't. But I have a friend who says the wax that builds up on her mare is BIG, and stretchy:) Just wondered.
