The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Anyway horses raised for this and the foals sold. Once they aren't "usable" anymore they are sold. You have an adult non-broken horse.

...Resulting in many, if not most, mares and foals alike going to slaughter, if they aren't picked up by resuce groups.

Hi all, just night wandering to see if there is a baby... going back to bed.

er.... rescue groups.

I dunno. I am of the mind that menopause is supposed to happen. I am not sure we are supposed to continue taking hormones when our own drop off naturally. Perhaps someone can explain why it's medically better to take estrogen.

Personally, I've been waiting my whole life for menopause. ;~D

HMM. Well, it's not going to alleviate menopause but help with side effects. To me that would kind of be like arthritis happening with old age or injury. No sense in a person (or animal)hurting or not feeling good if medicines to help IMO. I just don't like the way it's collected. I know we have discussed this before but Sharn I see no reason why the drug companies need to be in the horse business at all. They could contract out with individuals and supply equipment for collection. There would need to be a limit though so you didn't have contract horse farms springing up.

Sorry that I am so unaware of this, but boy......it doesnt sound good. I would have thought in this day and age that it was unnecessary.
I am just going to check on Sugar. BRB

Good evening,
Do we have a baby on the way? It sounds like it may be.

I'll be here for awhile, things have finally slowed down a little at my house.

I liked the pictures of your horses and their blankets.

They both look fine to me. As they age and are worked more they will thicken up (the horses that is) and you have a little room there for that to happen. Additionally, blankets need to be washed occassionally and they shrink a little. Much better big than too tight.

Since you are here, I'm going to leave for a little bit. I need to get some stuff ready for tomorrow.

Nothing. We've been up and down all night, and she's out there looking well rested.

Maybe! She must have known I was up all night! LOL I couldnt just go to bed though because I would worry that there would be a problem.
Sugar is grinning with the "fooled you" expression that Misty had a day before she had Adge and I stayed up.
Well, we have a beautiful sunny day, so I am going to make the most of it and get smoe outdoor stuff done.
I'll be on here later.
Have a great day everyone.
Sharn

I think I've told you this before, but the last baby I was waiting up for with a friend, we stayed out there all night on cots in the barn for four nights. She had the baby when we went in for breakfast and to make more coffee. I'd say we were gone 15 minutes ;~D

Another mare I know did have her first in the day time. They had boarded her at a nice facility for the birth. She was stalled all night and into the next day and really needed to stretch her legs and get out a little. They turned her out and she dropped out there to have it. They did go get her up and bring her in, by then it was too late for her to put them off.

I'm with your Dad, I don't want to do any of that fancy stuff either. Just give me a good horse and a pretty trail and I'll be happy for the rest of my life.
