The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Is the area where she will be lighted enough for you to watch?

We watched my mare, and to tell the truth, it isn't really anything I care to watch again:). Altho, I probably will this spring, mainly to make sure if there is a problem I will know,. It's neat to watch as soon after birth as you can catch. It's kind of funny in a heartbreaking way to watch to foal try to stand for the first time:)

Yes she has light from the workshop that we are leaving on, its also sheltered. She appears to be very restless today. Lots of stomping, tail swishing and snorting. (she is normal the quiet one).
We were lucky that although we missed Adge birth we were close behind. He was still struggling to stand and was as wobbly as could be. He struggled to find her milk too! Misty was pretty good and turned to help him.
Bambi lovers.........eat your heart out!

she has not eaten her usual amount today, its still there and she is picking at it......little by little. I just hope and pray that if she foals when James isnt here, that everything goes ok. I am reading everything I can get my hands on and am probably scaring myself to death.

Do you have a first aid kit on hand? And the number of the vet?

My mare was pretty good about standing still while Dot tried to get started. Poor girl tho. She was awful sore. Every time Dot did get hold she hump up in a reflexive way, and make like a snorting whinny sound, but she never moved away. I think she was really trying to let Dot get a hold, but reflexes caused her to arch up her back which pulled the teat out of Dot's mouth. Jenny, my daugher, and I finally helped. I stood at Belle's head and patted her, to get her attention off what the foal was doing. It took nearly 2 hours to get the foal nursing good. That worried me, because the book said they should nurse in 1 hours. I think books tend to be "ideal". If she hadn't got the job done with in the next 30 minutes I would have called the vet. But since they were both doing their best, I waited a bit, and it all worked out fine.

Most generally, it is after dark. Between 10-12. Sorry, but hey at least it's not cold there.

It was 11 here this morning, barely reached 20.

Oh, my, I thought it was in the 70's there?? during the day at least, I didn't realize it would get that cold at night. Sorry, that will make it hard to stay out there to watch.

I dont think it will get that cold, its still very warm. If it does though, maybe i should start evacuating your tools from your workshop? Cause if you think you need to be in from the cold, so does Sugar! LOL
