Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Founder is a broad term for when the interdigitation of fibers between the hoof wall and P3 (coffin bone) loosen and P3 moves out of alignment from the hoof wall. It doesn't necessarily mean P3 rotates completely through the sole of the foot, although it can do that.
Cure? No. Corrective shoeing helps. Depends on the degree of rotation and use of the horse, etc.
Well the farrier was suppose to be here at 1, but he just called and said his truck broke,down we rescheduled for Mon. Ok, by me, it's cold here and is suppose to be cold all weekend. I have JP today anyway, and am going later with Jenny to pick up Blake.

How long do you hose down the feet?
Not long, although I've never timed it - I guess probably 10 minutes, several times a day.
I realized when you asked that, my answer to anything horse related would probably be not long because it doesn't seem like I spend a lot of time caring for them but in fact, feeding that seems like it takes 10 minutes takes 45minutes to an hour. Baths that only take a couple of minutes really are a couple of hours. I guess because I enjoy my times spent with them, it doesn't seem long.

I've been told stress can bring it on too?
The main things that would worry me about a horse foundering would be getting in to the feed bins, or a very overweight horse.
Would you think bulky more muscle bound horses would be more prone to foundering easier? My friend Celia thinks so. She thinks horses like our stud, would be more susceptible, then say Rusty or Harley who are not so muscled. I don't know.

It is.... to me it is the most mysterious and perplexing thing that can happen to them. It has no human equivalent to relate to, like injuries or even colic does. It boggles the mind that food or stress can make their feet come apart.
I'm not sure if muscle bound horses are more prone to founder but I know that horses with cresty, fat necks definitely are. George's neck looked like a draft horses neck, it was so cresty. Since he's gotten older and in bad health, his neck isn't nearly so cresty.
Stress can bring it on, also. That's why it's so hard to prevent, there are soooo many things that can bring it on.
No kidding! Have you ever tried to explain founder to someone who knows nothing about horses? It's almost impossible.

You know how they let you look at them and take the ones you want? The clerk and I went thru them together. We just kept looking at them. Not a whole lot of snow but it looks like a winterland:')
After our talk of working on ground manners, ecurbh and his mare Cyn went out today and did a little ground work.
Followed by the fan club....
After that was over a good roll.... She'll drop right in front of you as soon as you take the halter off.... really unusual ;~D
And then she went over to take it out on the pony.
How unusual about her dropping like that but she's so photogenic. You get some great shots.
After Sarah Lee was cooped up a few days they were all feeling good out in the pasture. The trainer and I watched her walk over to another horse and slowly turn and postion her butt and then half heartedly kick at another horse. It was like she had to set up and I know it took a couple of minutes. The other horse just as funny. She took her own time getting out of the way and didn't really jump but just eased out of the way. The trainer laughing. She said we were watching the lowest two in the pecking order. :') As usual, I didn't have my camera with me.
Wimp fight!
I used to think Bay and the pony were bonded, but that was nothing. Those two mares are becoming quite the inseparable pair... they just sit and fuss and fidget with each other all day long.
Poor Bay. Do you ever separate the ladies?
He doesn't seem to mind. If he gets involved it's to drive them both around for awhile.
It'll be interesting when we do seperate them! Lots of quiet pony powder before the next trail ride.

Hehe. I like the picture of Bay in the foreground and the two girls in the back. It's like he's saying, "Yep! Those are my ladies!"
