Oh, and one other thing (Sorry)
When/if you do give them a good sudden, firm, jab with your elbow, be ready the first few times for them to be very surprised, might go back or sideways fast on you if they're not tied. Make sure you have a good hold of them, or they're tied securely, you don't want them to get away or break free. If they're tied, and go back they may fight the tie up for a few seconds. Let them. DON"T untie or rescue. Just get out of their way, and then stand quietly saying whoa, calmly.

Looks like english sizes range from 16" to 18" in my catalog, but I'm like ya'll, looks like it'd be a bigger difference.
I use elbows too. I don't feel that's bad. They just touch mine and get back. Probably looks dorky but that's how I walk them. I don't want to get stepped on if they get in my space. I've never had to "elbow" them much. They make contact and get back. I'm probably too cautious but I don't even let them turn their head when I'm grooming. I just push them back. They have never tried to bite me but I figure why give um a target:') I do give them an occasional horse treat (I know) from my hand but it's kind of training too. I make them stand still until I bring it to their mouth. If they go munching they don't get it. I do the same with a feed bucket. I make them stand while I sit it down and then wait a few more seconds. I can walk them out with the lead rope in one hand and the bucket in the other with no problems.
The only other thing I would add is to look them dead in the eyes with a really nasty look when you do it. We call it the "mother-in-law" look. It's the same look the Alpha mare gives them right before she bites or kicks the snot out of them when they get in HER space. Before you know it, all it takes is "the look".
Hands are OK for pushing the body over, the important thing is to avoid slapping at their ~face~ with hands all the time. You want to be able to reach up at them with hands and have them not fear that.
The few times I have slapped with an open hand, or even fist for that matter (one time:), it usually hurts my hand more then I know it hurt the horse:) Not worth it.

Heh... I know that's true with my dogs!
Kids too. Nothing makes me madder than popping a blood vessel in my hand. Talk about stinging.
I've seen that look but I didn't know what it was called:')
Hi, Just reading back through all the posts, to play catch up and saw yours. We love Tennessee and stay in cabins as much as we can. (Our dream to own one). The very best cabin that we have ever stayed in was in north Tennessee, great riding. It was www.tomthallcabin.com It is really worth the money. Very private. Hot tub, the works!
Yeah, there are tons of cabins that cater to horsemen up around Big Southfork and Eastfork. There's hundreds of miles of trails at each of those places. I'd love to go some day. Lots of my riding buddies go, but my husband doesn't ride, so I'll just have to keep on dreaming I guess.
My dream is to move up there and build a log cabin. I get log home living magazine and dream every month! I have even drawn up the plans!
I dont consider myself a rider, very inexperienced compared to James (deaconjim) and friends, but i love animals and have conquered my extreme fear of horses. Up till a year ago, i wouldnt go anywhere near one. I have a healthy regard for ours and know they can be dangerous, but have finally fallen in love with them!
Did you get the 04 calendar with a log cabin plan each month? Beautiful centerfold.
yes and it reminds James everyday.(cant miss it!) that he has promised us a cabin one day in a "thankyou" return for me caring for his parents here! LOL
I like the one with the two solar rooms. Your little one a cutie too. I told mines momma it was time to put him in training pants. He goes and stands in front of the commode and does his business in his pamper. She said she couldn't afford pull ups. Pull ups? Don't little kids wear training pants any more?
I need to get a 2005 one.
I just use normal underpants and pullups (diaper like pants) for night. The trouble with those is, kids still think they are wearing a diaper.
If you go on the site i mentioned before, there are a lot of photos of us with "family music" and also fishing! It was the best place we have ever stayed in. I wanted to buy it and stay there forever! ...........dreams.......
I have a 2005 one! Hehe!
