The few times I have slapped with an open hand, or even fist for that matter (one time:), it usually hurts my hand more then I know it hurt the horse:) Not worth it.

Whenever I hit a horse, it's usually on the neck. I never go for the muzzle unless a horse really tries to bite me. Usually my voice does the trick.
