Thread Four: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1332664/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I've looked around and I can't see any requirement to scan for microchips at slaughter.
I don't know anyone that has done it with horses... But I can't see why the same tech wouldn't be as good in horses as it is in dogs. Is it becoming more common?
How do they do those lip tattoos? Do they do them on babies or under some anesthesia I would imagine? I've seen them on ex racers, and from what I know of tattooing, it's not a fast process... not as fast as a freeze brand.
Maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part coz I didn't see any reason why it wouldn't work for horses as well as it works for dogs and cats at the shelter either, as long as they scan for them first. It sure would be nice coz nobody would know the chip was there so there would be no attempts to alter or camouflage it.
I don't know when it's done, I'm sure it's done with an anesthia of some kind though. Tattoos on goats and dogs ears are done with a press type affair that has needles on the inside. You can change them around to change the numbers and symbols. On goats there is a purple ink on the needles.
I know that.
To be honest, I guess I was reading all the "I don't mean to offend" posts about not taking him off his meds, like anyone who would suggest such a thing was lacking in compassion for a horse. I'm sorry if I came across harsh.
Becky
So it's likely a one-punch kind of affair, rather than a guy sitting there with a tattoo pen drawing out letters? That makes more sense than what I was thinking.
I saw something interesting today at Pet Smart. I went to buy horse wormers, and with the wormers they had a "Worming Bit". Ever see one?
It was a bit, on a headstall that one side of month piece was hollow, for the tube of wormer to slide into. then you just pushed the plunger.
Becky
Nope. I know you wouldn't ever want me just riding him lame. You just wonder if he really would be lame, and I really don't know.
I haven't seen one of those. did it look easier than getting wormer in the reluctant horse?
Fair enough:)
Becky
Yes and no. I'm wondering if it gets the wormer far enough back into their throat..??
Becky
Yes, envision a garlic press with needles on the inside.
Hmmm.... I'll look for it around here.... the pony is a little difficult, but not impossibly so. was it expensive?
I've never seen one of them. We just stick a thumb in at the back of the mouth on relunctant horses. They are so used to it (every two months) that they just swear under their breath so to speak, and submit.
I should add a couple of them will try to spit it out if they aren't watched for a minute or two.
You know I didn't even look at the price. Rocky is my only problem horse to worm (but he did just fine a few minutes ago:), so I wouldn't need one. If he was taller he would be a problem:) Just curious if it's something new.
Becky
As for as the other, I might surprise you, if you ever saw me working with them. Just because I don't like getting on their case , doesn't mean I can't get the job done:') It wasn't like that though. Sometimes thing read different than said, I think. She bucked and I jerked so hard and yelled whoa that I pulled her facing me in a lope and tripped her. I guess I caught her just right. I let her stand there a little while (past 10 seconds) and then walked over and positioned, patted her, never said a word and started again. I don't know about this 10 second rule though caz she still knew she did something I didn't like. I just wondered if it was safe to jerk them that hard while they are running.
Rocky just bobs he head up and down real high, thank goodness he's not very tall:). And go backwards if I don't put him in the corner of his stall.
My biggest problem with him tho is, once I do get it in his mouth he won't swallow. He stands all stiff lipped, and sullen, and wont' swallow, If I walk away, he spits it out. One time, I decided I could out wait him, holding is head up till he swallow....LOL...he held the stuff in his mouth so long it melted and diluted and just seeped out around his whole mouth.
NOW, I just keep poking the syringe in till he swallows.
Becky
I was just coming in here to say IT'S SNOWING IT'S SNOWING! and get all excited, but before I could post it, it looks like it has already stopped ;~\
As to the wormer tube we have one at the stables but I pass on it. I can get it in myself and I worry about aspiration with it.
