The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I keep expecting one of the bikers to move over, let the car come along side and then whip out a weapon. I'd probably have to testify in court in his defense. :)

Other drivers are the biggest danger in bike riding. Anyone gets close to me, I just pull over and let them go around. You just can't ever not be watching out for the other guy.

I really like those kind of dogs:). Everyone I have ever been around have all thought they were big dogs:).

There is one that lives in a house that I ride (on horses) past alot. He always comes bouncing out, snarling, with his hair raised, like he's going to tear the horse apart. There are some other bigger dogs there too, and they will keep their distance and go away when I shoo them. But not that little guy:) My biggest fear is him getting kicked. He just seems to not have any fear at all of the horses.

I see that here. All the traffic is going 65-70mph on Hwy 50, a good many of them tailgating and then cars coming out of side streets just blowing through the stop sign. Guess they figure they can go from 0-65mph in three seconds.

At least in a vehicle, you have some protection - the guys on the bikes have none.

They have a short circuit in their brain. They think they are 80lb dobermans, not 9lb toys.

Mini doxies sure are that way.... fearless little monsters, really... I dog-sat one for a friend that would bite me as soon as I entered the house, and hang on. I wore my knee-high riding boots and waded through him. He also attacked my Labrador Logan... looked like a dangly earing hanging on his head. Logan just tried to shake him off and looked at me like "What is ~WITH~ this thing?" ;~D

I always thought the same thing. But you know since we got the bikes and have been around bikers some, most of them are really the nicest people you'd meet. Even the big burly Harley guys.

We went to Sturgis a few years back. We got caught in some rain and had to wait it out in the parking lot of a conveince store. All the lights in the town got blown out by lightening too. I thought for sure a riot would ensue. But we actually had a good time there. There was no problems, no fights, just a bunch of people waiting it out, and having a good time.

All of the ones you see around here are so nice. We host Street Vibrations every year, with thousands of Harley riders coming in and never a problem. Virginia City also is usually full of bikers during the summer and again, great people.

LOL. Like your story about Logan:)

When I decided to get a small dog, I really considered one of those. But since I was looking for more lap dog type, I figured it wouldn't work. Got a Jack Russel instead, which normally is really not much better. I didn't know alot about JR's before I got Susie. After I committed to taking her when she was a puppy, I did some research. I thought I had made a mistake, and would have not taker her if I hadn't already committed.

I don't know if she is just more laid back then what I read they were like, or if I did something right :) raising her. She's pretty much a lap dog.

Tessa tries so hard to get the cats to run (3 Maine Coons at about 18-20lbs each). They just look at her like she's nuts.

She got loose one day and got into the horse paddocks. I was screaming, horses were bucking and she was mystified at the uproar.

Susie just doesn't fit the picture of my reading about Jack Russells. If the horses get to running she takes off for the house immediatly with her tail tucked:) She's really turned out to be just the kind of dog I wanted, but from what I have read and what people who have seen her say, she doesn't fit the norm.

I was told JR's were not good around kids. So far, although I'm very careful about it, she has never once been aggressive to any kid. JP, my grandson, has gotten hold of her too a few times, when they have both been in my lap at the same time. She just always wants' to lick him right in the face.

Oh, she does get pretty aggressive with the cat. And I've pulled her off him before. But then the stupid cat comes back and gets her going again. I think he actually likes playing with her. Funny thing is, when he gets in a postion to have the upper hand, and goes to slapping at her, she tucks her tail and come climbs up in my lap.

Jack Russells are very smart little dogs though. They learn quickly and she's smart enough to realize the danger of getting stepped on by a horse.

I think the problem with children is that they won't take the abuse (unwitting) that kids dish out like a lab would. And being small, they are more easily hurt unintentionally.

See you in a bit.

Crazy little guys... tenacious. Friend had a Scottie dog, was the same way. Used to run out and bark at the horses, oblivious to calls for her to come back. The horses pretty much ignored her until Taffy's baby was born (the paint mare and foal you have seen in pictures of me). Taffy stomped that little dog hard, she ran off, we had to rush the dog to the vet bleeding with her scalp split pretty bad. They stitched her up and bandaged her up, and I'll be darned if she didn't run out there again the next day with the bandages still on!... They gave her away to her mother who lives safely in town ;~D

The sun just came out here... not sure it is going to warm up though.

We have to run into town at some point and buy a bunch of ammunition. We're going shooting tomorrow. ;~D
