The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

True. I'm trying to put a flyer together to post tomorrow. I can't get it to come out like I want it. Would yall start with anyone interested or invite people to call for info for an already established club? Any suggestions?

I think I'd say it was the formation meeting of the club and all were invited.

What are you planning to do in the club? trail ride? play games? any idea?

I found one in the paper for 100 dollars. You had to bring tires and be prepared for a lot of TLC though. They go low at auctions around Houston too. The sellers never get their minimal asking price but often will just let someone on the parking lot have it at a lower price to keep from hauling it back. Now a bad time to buy around here though. Until the stocks shows over in Feb.

I would rather get one that was safe as is.... I'm not a mechanic (neither is ecurbh) and we'd be paying a lot to have everything worked over on an old trailer.

Check on the prices then for aluminum trailers (they are much lighter) and on goosenecks (which pull much better). We have a four horse slant load enclosed trailer. It's nice because if push comes to shove, we can trailer four horses. Most of the time, we have at least one divider out so that it's easier to trailer with saddles on or trailer moms and babies.

Our's isn't aluminum so it takes a heavy duty truck to pull it and uses more diesel.

What is the club's objective? Are you forming one or is it already formed?

We thought we'd try to get a bumper pull because we'd rather have the bed of the truck remain useable. I know they do have ball hitches that don't obstruct too much, a nice three horse bumper pull or stock trailer would work just fine.

We are forming it. Our objective hasn't been determined yet. My trainer really likes the idea and will probably nudge us in the right direction but for now we are just talking about everyone bringing a dish and meet once a month and talk horses and go from there. Nothing else around here.

Okay. Think long about getting a stock trailer. They are great as long as the weather is okay but for long pulls in bad weather, you're going to have a wet, cold horse.

Mine is a stock but the top enclosed. I could drop canvas by the side but there is no way I would pull it in bad weather. Pulling a trailer sure makes a long trip IMO.

I had an old 2 horse straight with a divider but it was a fight to get the horses in it. We bought it and like you were going to fix it up but we just didn't have the time. I really liked the tack room on the front though.

We've had stock trailers and until this one, had bumper pulls. I really like the difference in the gooseneck, once you're on the road, you don't know it's there really. I blanket even in this trailer if it's cold and/or the horses are sweating but I always felt like my horses were freezing in the stock trailer. 'Course my weather is a little more extreme than yours most of the time.

Yes, they were a bitch to load an unwilling horse in :)

Mine now has a tack room and then a ledge in the gooseneck that we've put a mattress in. There are windows up there and my husband can sleep in it when he goes hunting and the facilities are only a sleeping bag and a campfire.

I think on the dismount, if I remember right, I kick out of both stirrups and just kind of jumped off.

A good mount is the horse stands perfectly still till your in the saddle, set, and ask the horse to move off.

On the horsemanship judge side, IF the horse starts to move off you need to stop him, not go ahead and swing on as the horse moves with no correction. You need to do it fast, not dawdle, but You need to sit down gently, not land "heavy" :) It all sounds easy (to me) but doing it requries quick reflexs, and lots of control of your own self.
