Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
At rides that have highline poles, you can stationary tie to a high line, they cant' be able to move up and down the line, BUT, they still want the rope tied long enough for the horse to lay down.

I'm out of here for a while too, season premier of 24 is on. We're recording so we can fast forward thru the commercials. I think enough is recorded that we can start and not catch up to the end.
See ya. It's been fun tonight.

I found the page, but no list of banned drugs. I sent an email to the Veterinary Chair, though.
I've not taken him off of it, nor do I know how long he'd have to be off of it to be legit. My vet said I could try, that he might stay sound, but I've said 'don't fix it if it ain't broke. the pills are easy to administer, can be varied if I think he needs more or less on a given day and are not expensive. I can give him as many as 25 according to the prescription, I usually give him 15 morning and 10 at night. Sometimes a few extra at night if he's worked hard.
Your CPR posts awesome. Maybe someday I can try stuff like that. Are the entry fees stiff? How did you learn about all the rules. Just trial and error?
What is the effective ingredient in the pills, do you know? There may be something that can replace it.
Sounds like you've got a good trainer :)
I'll grab the bottle if they say it's banned, and see if there's anything on it I can search out. It's a people med, that's why the dosage is so high, but not bitter tasting, so he'll eat it in grain.
Yeah. Took me awhile to realize it though. She's very cautious and I used to feel babied and wanted to run before I walked . Now she says jump and I ask how high:')
Do you have a TSC? They sell connecting panels and you wouldn't have to pay shipping. I'm planning on putting a small holding pen at my lake lot.
If it's a people medicine then it's even more likely something else can be found if necessary.
I read about it somewhere. After I got my mare I wanted to do something with her competivitly but was not ready to try barrels:) I ask arount about CTR and that is how I met Celia. She gave me some tips, and I took off for Marshall Tx. to try one. Been hooked ever since:) It's mostly been trial and error.

No, I don't think so. Do they have a website?
Maybe you can get some of the others in your area to join you. It really does sound like fun.
I rode on one ride put on by a local club here several years ago and I did enjoy most of it. Some of the obstacles I thought were dangerous but the group you're talking about doesn't sound like they would do that.
Oh, I forgot entry fees...I think the entry fees run about $60-80 dollars, then there is usually a camping fee. I was doing 5 year, and figured it was costing on "average" $100 per ride. But that includes trailering, and I went to some rides that were 6 hours away. So I had alot in fuel.

That's not bad.For some reason I thought it would be a lot more.
So do you think Rusty up to it yet?
No, saftey is the biggest factor they are looking for. One time one of the judges parked a four wheeler in the middle of a path where one side was a steep cliff the other side was up the hill. We were told a little away from him to ride to him stop take the paper from him that he handed you then move on.
The point, they told us later, was picking the side that would be the safest to pass him. the side between the uphill and the four wheeler. I missed it:(. But you learn to pay attention to every detail.
Like once we were told the judge wanted to see us mount from a log that the horse had stepped across with just his front feet. So I jump off step the horse over, make a perfect mount. The thing was they were watching our dismounts too. Lost there too:(.
I have friends that do it. You also get to know the people at the rides. Your competitiors. My daughter and DIL have both done it with me also.

I'm not really sure. But I don't think so. He is/was sweating good. But he still pants. Possible lung damage. Nothing bad enough, the vet said, that should be a problem for him, except as a competitive trail horse:) His respiration would knock me right out at the P&R checks.

Thank you. Online shopping that I love - horse stuff :) I signed up so I could browse the prices.
