The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Mounting from the wrong side is a bitch:)

We had to do it at one ride, like I said I get nervous. Well I was trying and the horse stepped away from me a few times. I was really concentrated. The judges secretary finally coughed and said, your using the wrong foot:) I was so embarassed. But would have been more so if I had succeeded the way I was doing it. I'd have been sitting backwards.

I finally passed on that one.

Practice it all the time now. You should try it, it's really hard.

Boy, that is outstanding. I wish there were rides near here - that would be so interesting to check out. I don't think either of the horses we have in endurance would do well in that but a couple of the other horses might.

My vote is keep Harley and start working on going to the national convention.

Well, just because it's not scanned, doesn't mean it can't be scanned :)

WEll I told you before it would be great for the two of you:) You're allowed to ride together, but you can't crowd. In one way having a buddy helps, because your horse has a buddy the whole time. I ride often by myself, and sometimes someone will come along and ride awhile with me then either I go off or they do. If they leave it upsets the horse sometimes.

If you have a ride buddy that you know will be with you the whole ride barring them being pulled out, then it's not so bad when someone else buddies up for a while.

To me, controlling the herd instinct is the biggest challenge of CTR. Having horse come past you and go out of sight can be a challenge.

I don't believe that I have ever in my life mounted on the off side. Yes, I will try it - if the sun ever comes out.

Harley, I think really is a good canidate for it. When he was in conditon this summer, you couldn't get him tired, and his pulse and respiration were always good. I just have to get him over being afraid of being tied to the trailer.

Our trails at the forest, at least within 5 miles of the trail head, are pretty busy. horses get used to being passed, oncoming riders you need to get out of the way of, and that kind of thing. Strangers coming and going wouldn't throw Bay's cool, but anyone we've been with who suddenly takes off makes him get on the muscle, yeah.

That would be the biggest problem with Sonny and E - neither of them do well with a horse passing them. Indy is lazy, he couldn't care less if the whole pack passed him as long as nobody expected him to catch up :)

Well just don't come back and tell me it was as easy as pie:)

I still have to stop and think about what foot to put in the stirrup. When faced with it, it's like I just start slobbering and du du duhing. Brain goes into spasms.

Well, Bay may be too old to score well, but hopefully we could pass at a beginner level, and keep ecurbh company, and make a game of it. The challenges sound like a blast.

Is it required that he be tied? I saw some panels made out of pcv pipe like stuff in one of my catalogs. They were adjustable in height and length, set up to hook onto your trailer for a portable corral. Would that work?

Belle was funny, some rides she wouldn't pay the least amount of attention to the other horses, then the next she'd be jigging everytime one went past.

I never had trouble if she and I left someone, it was only when they left her.

No - I don't think I'll be telling you it's easy. First, I'll have to talk one of my horses into letting me do it - that will be a trip in itself.

Bay would probaably do great. In our region, we have lots of older horses like Bay. They do fine.

But, like I've also said, "every" ride I've been too, there have been horses colic or tie up, 2 times died. Because of people who do not condition enough. 20 miles at 4mph is not just a walk in the park. It may not be as hard as endurance, but it still requires conditioning. I was always amazed at the once a month riders that came and competed. Sometimes the horse made it, but you know that had to really take alot out of them. Celia was one of those types:). Several times her horse would colic.

The Vet judges check gut sounds, capillary refill time, all that stuff. But the odd thing (I think) is the vet judge will NOT treat a sick horse. The Asso. usually has a vet on call for emergencies. But the vet judge is not allowed to treat.

You're right about that, and I don't know if I should expect it out of him.... but I want to look into it. Knowing we'll be judged is incentive to go condition, if we are conditioning ~for~ something. Without a trailer, it's just riding 'round the pasture'
