I've had some run-ins with a few of these trans atlantic "allies" before. Several of them call themselves 'Redcoats' by way of redressing supposed slurs on their nationality by any means both childish and petulant. The part I am having trouble understanding is the part about hanging around a board they have nothing but contempt for. Any resposes from the old country would be considered mighty white by this dumb yank...

How would they know? Well, the American dentists might have an idea what the state of the American teeth is.

To be fair though, your average trailer dweller probably cleans his teeth on a daily basis. Unfortunately, he uses the oily rag found under the bonnet of his pick-up truck.

American dentists would ineed know about Americans' teeth, but I doubt very much that they would know much of anything about the state of the average Brit's dental habits or teeth.

Similarly, I doubt that you know much more about the folkways of Appalacian whites than you know about Masai tribesman.

If you were to go asking those good ol' boys about how they live they'd hear your Brit accent, call you a sissy-boy foreigner and give you the bum's rush out of the honkeytonk.

By the what do you know what those rednecks woud call a Brit's teeth?

Answer… organ grinders.

Exhibit #1 is the fact that deep-fried Mars bars are considered a delicacy in the UK.

A few points. First, the deep-fried Mars bar is utterly unknown outside of Scotland. Secondly, therein it is generally consumed only after several pints of beer. Thirdly, I lived there for four years as a student, mixing among exactly the sort of people who would eat on, and yet I never even saw one made. Fourthly, delicacy? what planet are you from - a Scottish delicacy would be haggis (no they're not animals, b.t.w, though many Americans think they are), which is a gorgeous thing.

Also, I would argue that even deep-fried Mars bars are preferably as eating to the brains of a neighbouring tribesman mixed with sago. So drawing New Guinea into things is possibly not a good idea.

Finally, may one ask what the British hinterlands are? This is a tiny little island, we just don't have hinterlands. I suspect you mean N.H.S. dentists which are rare (for various reasons), but I can assure you that dentists per se are available in sufficient quantity.

You have been presented with a factual statement given by a qualified person; either refute it with evidence (rather than conjecture) or accept it.

Furthermore, did you know that per head of population the US buys half as much toothpaste as the UK and far fewer toothbrushes and mounthwash too?

Interesting. This would explain why their breath is so bad.

Now they're playing the Americans and the Euros one against the other.

I hope it's not that Machiavellian, but with society-redesigning laborites/liberals in power and with Blair a fairly safe shoe-in come next election cycle, it looks as though they do want to play one against the other. To what eventual end, I don't really see.

Eh, it's a mixed bag. There does seem to be a close-knit clique that sees itself as conservative but in reality are what would pass as Berkeley liberals in this country but are not quite full-blown parlor pinks in their own country so they think of themselves as conservative. It's all relative, I guess ;-)

I wouldn't worry about him. Unlike you, Quidnunc probably has a full set of teeth, an up to date passport and a sense of humour.

Wrong, maggot. Full set of 32. Had braces for a year and I have a better than average sense of humor. Last passport I had was 2 years ago when I was active duty Navy. Government passport, at that. No need to renew, I mean, it's not like I've never been around the world four times. Seen Kuwait, Penang, Phatya Beach Phuket, Dubahi, Okinawa(three years), Hawaii, Panama, Columbia, St Thomas, St Croix, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Canada (doesn't count. San Francisco lite), Germany, Spain, Italy, Bahrain. I'll think of others as i recall them. What is it about the bible belt? Someone from Oklahoma kick your ass at some point in the past? You do obsess about the heartland so, I have to wonder...

I've never been the same since I saw Deliverance. The godbotherers can be pretty scary, so can Southerners. If you mix them together, that's a Jerry Springer episode waiting to happen!

While that can be frightening, at least they don't go on voting after they die. If knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing banjo players keep the DNC at bay, that's a price we're willing to pay. That's why "in-the-drink" Teddy Kennedy doesn't "resonate" anywhere other than Massachusetts.
