P. Manning Breaks Marino's Record With 49th TD Pass Quarterback Snaps 20-Year-Old Mark With Toss Against Chargers By JON KRAWCZYNSKI, AP Sports

INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 26) -- Peyton Manning broke Dan Marino's single-season touchdown pass record when he threw his 49th of the season on Sunday against San Diego.

Manning hit Brandon Stokley on a 21-yard post pattern with 56 seconds to play, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Edgerrin James' run tied the score at 31.

Per Manning's request, the game was not stopped, and Manning strode calmly off the field before being mobbed by teammates on the sideline.

Manning entered the game with 47 touchdown passes, needing two pass the player he grew up idolizing as a young quarterback in Louisiana.

He tied the mark with a 3-yard shovel pass to James Mungro in the third quarter, then hit Stokley to break the mark in dramatic fashion.

Marino threw 48 while guiding the Miami Dolphins to the Super Bowl in 1984, and now Manning is hoping to follow a similar path. The record stood for 20 years, and was at one time thought of as untouchable, football's answer to the home run record.

But just as Roger Maris' 61 was shattered by Mark McGwire and then Barry Bonds, it was only a matter of time before Marino's mark fell once Manning got going this season.

He has thrown five touchdown passes in a game three times this season and six against Detroit on Thanksgiving. But his bull-rush on the record slowed to a crawl in recent weeks, with two TD passes against Houston, then just one in a 20-10 win over Baltimore last weekend.

Still, he entered Sunday's game against the Chargers seven scoring passes ahead of Marino's pace.

Marino threw 44 touchdowns in 1986, and the closest any player got to his record after that was 41 by Kurt Warner with the St. Louis Rams in 1999.

Many thought it would take a near flawless season to pass Marino, and Manning has delivered just such a performance. He entered the game with a 123.9 quarterback rating, far superior to Steve Young's season record of 112.8.

Great commercial. And I really hate commercials.

"Many thought it would take a near flawless season to pass Marino, and Manning has delivered just such a performance."

Or only playing against 1 top 5 defense throughout the season whereas Marino played against 2 of the top 10 and 5 or 6 of the top 10. I like Manning and I don't mean to be too sarcastic, but Manning would be the first to admit this fact also (and he has in so many words).

The Colts need to play better in the playoffs than they did today or they won't have a chance.

"It boggles the mind to imagine how many scoring throws Manning might have if his team were pass happy, or if the lopsided score of so many of his games didn't result in him being pulled in the second-half. In back-to-back games in November, for example, Manning sat out the fourth quarter because the Colts winning by more than 30 points. At the rate Manning is throwing touchdown passes, he would end the season with 59 if given the same number of chances to throw as Marino had in 1984."

"How many rings does he have, again?"

I would venture to say that lots of guys who have rings are not near the football player that Peyton Manning is.

No denying that Peyton is by far the most talented QB in the NFL, but he's got to step it up in the postseason unlike he has before, since that's what matters in the end.

I'm not saying he won't though.

Seems I remember that Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl game.

So the Super Bowl is not everything in regards to personal performance.

With a Super Bowl win, the quarterback can't do it alone; it takes the entire team playing at their best.

I'm sure Manning will keep giving 100%. Hopefully, the rest of the team will play at that level too.

He's still Bill Belichick's Biyatch.

All I'm saying is that winning is all that matters in the end.

Peyton's got a long career ahead of him. It's way too early to discuss his legacy, and predict whether he'll win or not.

But that Marino never won a championship does sort of keep him from being mentioned alongside guys like Montana and Elway, who managed to win Super Bowls, and got it done themselves when their teams needed it.

It is a team thing, true. No one will ever say that Trent Dilfer is comparable to Manning just because he won a Super Bowl behind a dominant defense. But as the 2000 Ravens relied of their D, the Colts need Manning.

But last year, for example, Manning threw 4 INTs in the AFC title game. I don't expect he'll do that in this year's playoffs, but whether or not he delivers when it truly matters are what'll define Manning's career. No won cares if a QB wins MVP if he throws 4 picks in the playoffs.

BTW, I'm not bashing Peyton. He's had an incredible season. If the Colts lose, it'll likely be because of their defense, not because of him. But still, winning a Super Bowl is all that matters, and I think he'll get one in the end. Not this year, but in the future.

Your point well taken.

Hopefully the Colt's offensive line will be able to keep the pressure away from Manning--that will help more than anything to keep the interception numbers down.

Yes, the Colts defense is weak, but Colt Dwight Freeney leads the league in sacks.

Yes, he is scarily good. And the Colts are good enough to win the Super Bowl. I doubted them for a while, but they can do it. I don't think they WILL (I don't think they'll win back to back games in Foxboro and Pittsburgh), but they're clicking.

Peyton is good but he's not a great quarterback yet. I mean he's no John Elway. He hasn't proved that he can win the big games against the toughest teams. He hasn't proved that he can lead a winning drive when he's running out of time and he has to score now. The Chargers are just one year out from having a very weak defense and they disrupted Peyton's passing game fairly well for the first three quarters. If the Bolts had covered kickoffs better today, they would have won.

Peyton strikes me as more of an intense competitive guy who's up for every game even against the weak teams. He's like Marino in that sense, so they both rack up big statistics against the bad defensive teams. But I think the guys who are a little more relaxed, like Elway and Montana, are able to crank their game up to another level for the big playoff and Super Bowl games. We'll see if Peyton has another level to his game. I don't know yet.
