Posted on 12/26/2004 9:45:54 AM PST by festus
Paw-in-law has gotten ahold of an old Mossberg .22 rifle and wants to know how old it might be. I've been googlin and saw it was forsale in a 1938 catalog but don't know how long this rifle was produced.
Barrel is stamped :
O.F. MOSSBERG & SONS INC. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A NO. 46B 22 S-L-LR PATS. PDG
It also has a scope
MOSSBERG-NO. M4(b) 4 POWER-PAT. PEND.
Any idea how to find out how old this thing is ?

I have a Mossberg 146B that I bought in the mid '50s that looks a lot like the 46B, only that it has a 26" barrel. It means that the long tubular magazine can hold 30 shorts!
Otherwise, it looks the same. I got it to be used as a competive target rifle. It's a real tack-driver.

Ditto - I cleaned mine up and lapped the barrel, and it shoots as good as my son's Anchutz 2000

Go to a decent book store and find a current copy of "The Blue Book of Gun Values".
If you're the seller, it's called patena. If you're the buyer, it's called rust.
