Is it ok to feed my cats raw bacon?

Posted on 12/24/2004 11:51:13 AM PST by little bus

One day, my cats were hungry and I didn't have anything in the house to feed them except raw bacon. They loved it! I continued to give them raw bacon each day and now it's their favorite food (they won't eat raw sausage, though). In fact, now they don't want anything else. I've tried different foods on them - vienna sausage, potted meat, canned mackerel, etc., but they want their bacon. Someone told me this might not be good for the cats, but they seem healthy. What do you think? I see cats on this sight sometimes when I surf, so maybe you know something here.

I didn't respond to you because I checked that you've been here for several years and would have been ZOTted. I love sarcasm, but sometimes people get p!ssed, so I often suffix a remark with: /sarcasm.

And when I rant, I use: /rant so I don't get flamed too badly if I'm not wearing my Nomex and tinfoil hat. LOL

BTW, Merry Christmas!

Turn them out with piney rooters and let them get their own bacon.

On the subject of what animals will eat.....I'm currently on vacation in Scottsdale, AZ and went to Turf Paradise Racetrack in Phoenix...went over to the paddock to watch
the horses come out for the 7th race. One horse took a few fragrant flops as he was being led around the walking ring by the groom. A little bird hopped out into the paddock and began taking pecks at his freshly made "lunch".

Okay. Picture a Vietnam vet, recently back from a tour in-country. Okay. Okay. So, he gets into the Timothy-Leary-Psychedlic-Music-Woodstock-thing. Okay. So he decides to get a VW free-love bus.

This is what he would have created.

I used to own a rabbit that would open up a big can of whoopass on any cat he encountered. He was a 20lb flemish giant.

My ex used to own a lop-eared that would try to put whoopass on all the dogs in the neighborhood and then beat feet back to the house if they came after him. He was especially notorious for finding the ones on a chain and then jumping just in and out of the max chain circle-radius.

I feed my cat little children. They are cheaper than cat food and it helps to keep my neighborhood quiet.......

Unfortunately, I must have been a little too subtle.

Naaaah. Have you noticed that almost every time someone posts a sarcasm piece from scrapple.com (or formerly from The Onion), they get a buncha replies taking the article quite literally? It makes me think that a higher percentage of FReepers are concrete thinkers than would be found in the general population.

If you can't get your cats to forego the raw bacon for something else, try a freshly cooked leg of lamb. It just might work.

Several years ago our family was eating a large leg of lamb for Easter dinner, and after serving it, I set it on the sideboard, just behind me. A few minutes later, I heard a "thump" and turned to see our cat and the entire remaining leg of lamb being rapidly dragged across the living room floor, up the stairs, only to eventually disappear under our bed. The fast-departing leg was followed quickly by a yelling wife (mine) wielding a swinging broom with murder in her eye. She won (but it was a battle), and came back downstairs carrying the greasy leg, all covered with dirt and dust bunnies, of course. I suppose I would have helped her in the chase if I and our guests weren't so doubled over with laughter. Nobody wanted seconds.

Moral to the story: If a cat likes something, he'll find a way to get to it if you leave it out someplace. If he doesn't like it, it will stay forever where you put it and all the coaxing in the world will do nothing but make him crave something else he can steal.

(Come on you sons of bitches! Do you want to live forever?)

"That's a lot of ships."

"That's a bloody awful lot of ships."

"Jump engines back on line yet?"

"No. If I signal the fleet, they just might pick it up. If they do, and we can't get away, .."

"Well, who wants to live forever?"

"I do, actually. But what the hell. Signal away."

I like GL's music just fine. Saw him in concert decades ago, music was great, his audience interaction was minimal at best. That reminds me, I'll go and rip a few CDs now, thanks!

too much fat in a cat's diet can cause pancreatitis.

Cats and dogs will generally eat anything, including human and their own waste...

And who can honestly say that they haven't had a sumptious, luxurious feast comprised mostly of human feces? I know I have! Most normal adolescents go through a phase of s**t-cooking three or four times a day, but some are certainly attracted to it by it's very illegality.

I like both cats and dogs.
I am more of a dog-person, though, and raise my cats as if they are dogs.

Only because I looked it up.

...cats also love Old El Paso Hot Picante' sauce with salted chips. But be forwarned, they won't stop with just one.
