your reply rings true... yesterday on the drive home I called the "flagship classic rock station" in town, with "the largest collection of classic rock" and requested Sister Anne, by the MC5... the conversation went something like this:

me: can you play and MC5 song for me?

dj: how old are you?

me: 24

dj: and you like the MC5?

me: yeah, a lot... they rock

dj: we don't play them, they don't fit our format... how old are you again?

me: 24... what do you mean they don't fit your format?

dj: well we suck, ok? you wanna hear something else?

me: yeah how about "gimme danger" by the stooges?

dj: *click* *bzzzzzzzzzz*

me: what the $^#&*?!?!?!?!

If I was to pick a stooges song I would probably go with "your pretty face is going to hell" (or whatever that title was)

Sure the Stooges and the MC5 are not everyone's cup of tea but it's strange they don't play them on classic rock stations. They are not that "out there".

I believe the Dictators were from around that same time period. Now that was a good band.

Call every music station daily. Heck, call the sports talk stations. If thousands of people did this in their town every day, program managers would have to account for why they aren't playing "requests".

Somewhere along the line, formats could be stretched.

Here in Houston, 2 of the "classic" stations (60s and 80s stations) list their recent songs online and let you "rate" the songs. DUMP DUMP DUMP, Stones - okay, DUMP DUMP DUMP...
