The reason it's named Christmas Island is as one would expect: it was discovered on Christmas Day 1643 by Captain William Mynors. Click for double size:

And since this is Christmas Island, the posting would not be complete without a couple of pictures of its most famous annual event:

TOPICS: Arts/Photography; Education; History; Miscellaneous; Outdoors; Science
KEYWORDS: atoll; atomic; bonefish; coral; island; pacific; testing
As far as I know, there's no "Auld Lang Syne" Island.
Note: the linked source page has a number of very nice wallpaper-suitable space and Earth-from-space images. Even though I'm not a fan of the Space Shuttle and definitely not a fan of the International Space Boondoggle, er, Station, the images are always quite beautiful. I may have to revisit this site for a couple more Geology Pictures of the Week.

"...wallpaper-suitable..."
Save them as *.BMP and put into the Windows root directory.

Is a Muslim allowed to live on a place that looks like a giant pork chop?
