The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

some of the Chinese movies I've seen have lovely filmography but that language just grates on my ears

I'm glad I'm not the only one...

Now that the season is winding down, has 'ol 12 point' started making an appearance?

Oooh, I haven't seen the Macbeth one either...

Chinese is too sing-songy. It gives me a headache. Japanese is melodic and has actual tones to it, closer to English. Similarly, I enjoy hearing German more than Russian. And anything over French or Italian (because Italian sounds French to me).

Japanese, Welsh, Latin, and possibly Finnish I could listen to all day long. But English is still the greatest.

Seven Samurai is one of my favorite movies... also enjoyed Yojimbo and Sanjuro (Yojimbo is the basis for the Clint Eastwood movie A Fistful of Dollars). Rashomon is... brilliant, IMHO. I didn't care much for Ran, Kagemusha, or Throne of Blood (the "MacBeth" one) though.

It would be so nice if the local video store had anything beyond "Seven Samurai". What's "Sanjuro" about?

Sanjuro is a follow-on to Yojimbo, with Toshiro Mifune reprising his role as the "wandering samurai". In Sanjuro he aids a bunch of young retainers trying to obtain justice for their wrongly-accused lord.

I will have to hunt down and find those! I love wandering samurai. They have the best stories.

Heh, Yojimbo is hilarious in parts... Toshiro Mifune wanders into a town in the middle of a "gang war" and strings along both sides by pretending to work for each, while he's really working to bring both down. Lots of fights and double dealing!

Then I have a quest! Perhaps the other video chain actually carries foreign films...

If you find a video store that carries samurai movies, look for the Zatoichi series... I've seen several of them and liked them all! You might check to see if there's a "cult" video store anywhere near the college...

Trust me, I've been looking for a "cult" store to get my licensed anime fix. Most of the series I love I can't legally download... there is a dearth in Fort Collins of specialty video stores. Unless by specialty you mean porn, in which case...

Zatoichi. Will check. Who are they by?

See a list of the DVDs available in the U.S. here. That same site has lots of other info on the character and the background of the series as well.

Wow, that's a massive series... I see they have "Lone Wolf and Cub" there too. I keep trying to read that but they insist on publishing it in tiny little volumes that you can't even read.
