The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Oh, dear. Do you have that much burnable stuff?

I have unusable boxes from when I moved in plus a few items of furniture that are junk. Also scrap wood from the paneling that was in this room.

Ah. I was imagining piles and piles of magazines and old rags and wondering who exactly I was getting as a roommate...

last pair of Landmarks I had were made in the US... just found a tiny tag on these that says "Made in China"... bastiges... burris scopes are made stateside... I guess they've "outsourced" their binos... bastiges...

I think it all depends on the price range of the optics. Even the Leupold economy line is "outsourced".

I don't like the red chinese bit myself, but I see my buying their stuff (when nothing else is available) as helping a tiny bit of capitalism to someday undermine their commie masters. Buying stuff at WallyWorld harms us a lot less than an ex-president who gave away our nuclear secrets, and supercomputers, and aircraft tooling, to the chicoms in exchange for a few million (mabye even 100 million) in dirty money laundered through through the Rat party,

Minox 8x32BR compact, armored, and built like a little panzer, street price $550:

That's interesting... I'm quite familiar with Minox er... equipment. High quality and very handy. [I was the ships intel photographer, went to photo intel school... nudge nudge, wink wink... OK... it wasn't any James Bond stuff, but we did get to play with some pretty fun toys] :-)

I mostly agree with your take on chinese stuff.

Something I *have* noticed about binoculars is that it it getting harder and harder to find 10x50's. Seems everybody likes the smaller ones (duh, cuz they're better to carry around) but for folks like me that want binos for the boat, or to set on the table on the deck, the 10x50 is just about the perfect size.

That's when I got turned on to that little set of Minoltas. Bill over at Captain's Nautical is somebody that really knows optics, like one of three such technicians on the west coast... and he was really high on them. They're a 12.5x50, but are still really light and compact, and super clear glass, and really little distortion.

Yeah, those Minoltas are very nice. ;~)

Great for checking up on our horses out in the pasture.

One question though... what do the 12x50 numbers refer to? Angle of view, magnification power, etc?

I'm Windows and he's Unix. Not as big a problem I think, as I was worried about.

Just catching up.

Is this guy "Nirvana/Pearl Jam" sort of Unix, or is he "Grateful Dead" sort of Unix?

It matters... :-)

Glad you like 'em. :-)

The numbers on binos are "magnification x objective lens diameter"

So... 12 means that the object appears to be 1/12th the distance away (or 12 times closer). 50 is the diameter (mm) of the objective lens (the big last lens at the end). The bigger the objective lens the more light they pick up, making the object brighter.

10x50 is the standard issue bino for the Navy/CG.

The big binos I have at the beach are 16x80 for the Fujis and 20x80 for the Celestrons.

To: 300winmag; All

Hi all,

300winmag is sending more knives to my friend. He was promoted last week, and now has reports. So, I have asked for more of the hobbit hole knives to be sent for them. Just wanted to let you all know that he loves these knives and looks forward to being able to pass them out.

Thank you all for all you do for troop support. It truly makes them feel special.

It's us who can't thank them enough!

I think it's safe to speak for for all of us when I say that it's the least we can do. ;-D

Be sure to tell your friend how proud we are and how we pray for their safe return.
