White oak and red oak both work great for bows.
There is a fella on TG that makes SCCA wood bows and oak is his wood of choice. He's on ebay quite a bit IRRC.
The oaks are cheap, easily work and durable. Those are elb style btw.
you knew something about bois d'arc as well didnt you? how does that make for a bow? does it work as well as it should?
Finished the movie. Could do more decrapping...but I think I've about reached my limit for one day.
And the phone calls about the dogs are making me feel like I'm finally taking steps forward that I can't take back. That's exciting...but very scary, too. Gah...very scary.
Wait, you had phone calls about the dogs? Or you made phone calls about the dogs?
I have food. Tomorrow is an Atkins-based shopping spree. And it's weird that I got out of practice handling my own stick shift, I'm so used to using Mom's now!
hey Sam, make a roadtrip here and you can cut down a white or red oak of yer choice... gotta couple thousand of 'em... hickory too...
Now let me fly me theories past you.
First, I believe the unmarked knife is the same item as the "Timberline 94021 Aviator Boot Knife", shown below:
That knife lists for $165, and can be found on sale for about $105. The only difference, aside from the laser marking, is that it comes with a fancier hard kydex sheath that can be used with a boot clip, or web belt. The five I have are unmarked, and come with adequate soft belt sheath.
I believe Camillus was the OEM who made the knife for Timberline, which is a design company, but not a knife maker. For some reason or other, a small batch were left unmarked, and sold off through Sportsman's Guide. The knife looks perfect, so it may have been just a contract overrun. No brand-name markings, no fancy sheath, but $30 instead of $165 list price.
Sportsman's Guide is also involved with the Camillus "Black Ops", which is now our Hobbit Hole "utility knife" (I have a total of 17). Our has a green handle, but all the other dealers show them with black.
I can only guess was that a small batch with green micarta handles were made up, but never sent to dealers in large quantities. Sportsman's Guide got them, and we snagged a very few. $110 list for $30, and I can't see any difference except the color of handle, which I prefer.
As nice as the small Timberline is, it's just a bit small, and the sheath a bit lame, for serious military use. But I have no doubts about its quality or provenance.
I'll be keeping one for myself, and offer the other four to anyone here who wants one for the $30 apiece I paid for them.
When I see deals like this, I take a chance, and order five at once. If they're good, and more are available, I buy more. The first Hobbit Hole folding knife purchase was for five, also. If I can't get any more, well, at least I had five.
When they don't work out quite right, then you have an opportunity to scoop up one or more. These are great little knives, especially at this price. They just aren't what the troops could use, in comparison to the "Black Ops", which I start liking better with each one that I upgrade with the filework.
Drop me a freepmail if you're interested. Thanks.
I haven't called the one guy back - he left a note on my answering machine and also sent an e-mail. Turns out MCI turned off my long distance capability even though my bill is paid up and has been for months, and I'm not sure why. I have to call customer service and figure it out.
I got a call from another lady, too, who really wanted both dogs. And really...I guess I should say sure. It's just her and her husband and it sounds like the dogs would be spoiled rotten...taken everywhere and well cared for. They just had two dogs pass away within a short time of one another at 14 and...I can't remember what she said. 15?
But...she just sounded so flakey that I dunno. Fiona...I hate to give her to anything other than the perfect person. Gosh, I love her. I think I'm just thinking of excuses to avoid giving her up so quickly, but I should just...go with what happens, I guess.
I'll feel brighter in the morning, most likely. ;) But I'll have to call people back from the house. *sigh*
And the other side of this is that...people who know me well will instantly know something is up if the dogs are gone. I wasn't going to tell anyone for a little while, except my family. But this puts it out into the open quickly.
If I'd known that ad would get instant results...
If she wants both, and their other dogs lived to ripe old ages, it sounds like a good home. How old is this lady? She's not likely to die before the dogs, right?
It's a sign. This was meant to be.
I just feel like I owe the other guy a phone call first...he did contact me first.
Since he's planning to keep a dog in the shop with him, I don't know what he'll say if I confess Fiona's a barker.
So...maybe it'll happen that she and her husband will take both. No, I don't think they're very old. Kinda...yuppy couple from the sound of it, actually. Very nice, just a little out there is all.
And she has had dachshunds before and knows their personality and the kind of behavioral problems they can have...and her husband had dachschunds growing up and they're his favorite breed.
But...but...but...
Would love to, if ever I get the time.
Hey! Hesitater-Rosie is getting the upper hand! You're not supposed to do this!
Tell him Fiona's a barker, see what he says. If he still wants her, ask the couple if they want the other.
That's the plan.
Should know by tomorrow evening.
Gah...reality is really setting in, though!
On the bright side...my basement, while still chaos, at least has fewer items involved in the chaos. Junked a LOT today.
Whoo-hoo! So, just get the study cleaned up and slap that place on the market!
And now it's time once again to try to get Dell to do something about my malfunctioning, overheating computer. Sigh.
I'm wondering if I can at least talk bothers into helping with the office.
Tryin' to think of a Tom Sawyer scheme that might work...
And I have a lot of stuff to take to the dump.
But honestly...this is going fast than I thought it would. Yikes...
Computer still malfunctioning? Mine has been good except that it's starting to wear out! I need to get a new keyboard on eBay, I guess. This one is getting pretty wonky, and it's wayyyy out of warranty at this point.
It's got this little overheating bug. I can't watch dvds on it. So I want to get it fixed while it's still under warranty...
Tell the bothers you'll, um, lessee... feed them? Show them anime? Give them a cat?
I'm on the phone with MCI, tryin' to get them to switch me back on. First person I talked to said "that's odd", but couldn't help. *sigh*
Bothers don't want cats...but hopefully I can think of an appropriate bribe.
Food ought to work. Or guilt them into it.... "I've hosted music night all these years, the least you can do is help me with this".
Or just stick with food.

Sheesh, I didn't mean to click twice...
Now it's not showing up at all.
