The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well...if I did, it'd have to wait until the last minute! It can be snowy here until pretty late.

I was thinking more in terms of a) taking a hugh load to the Salvation Army store, and b) putting up a bunch of furniture type stuff on the bulletin board at work.

A garage sale would be good...I just don't know if I'll have a chance to pull it off. Might be a great way to pay for the gas money for the trip, though...

For now I'm just sorting into keep, junk, and find a new home for...

We'll see how things develop then! Summer is a better time to do that, but you prolly don't want to be tripping over the stuff until then. Can you box saleable stuff up and store it at your dad's till a good time?

That's one possibility, though they're short on space.

Might also be able to rent a storage place...though even that amount of money is money outta pocket. Still, I'd like to have this place all but bare by the time they start showing it, so it might be money well spent.

The toughest stuff will be the furniture, of course. Especially as some of it is either too junky for anyone but me (the couch, especially) or...has sentimental value. I'm wondering if I can fit any furniture at all in Van-sama...my rocker and my stool and possibly one bookcase. Probably not all of the above.

I hate to leave the computer desk, too! It was a housewarming gift from the people at my last company. *sniff* But that DEFINITELY has to stay.

I'd consider renting a UHAUL trailer to bring more if you would regret losing things you just can't fit in a van.

Heh...except that I'm afraid of driving even the van! I don't do cities bigger than 10k, remember? And I'll have to go by LOTS of bigger cities.

I don't want any more of a car than I can handle. No...I'd be way too stressed over the trip to want to deal with furniture.

If I can fit the rocker, I'll take it. And the stool I painted. The rest...I can remember. ;-)

This is an adventure. You don't know what you are capable of until you are standing at the end of a tunnel looking at the dragon.

The drive itself will be enough of an adventure! I'm trying not to think that far ahead...

I know it's silly...but considering Manchester, NH makes me panic...I really am afraid, looking ahead. Truthfully, it's part of why I'm doing this. But small bites at a time...

BTW, Van-sama was really good at fighting dragons...eh, Jen?

We'll get through this.

Too bad about the computer desk, surface space is one thing I'm a little short on. Any chance you can dissemble it and strap it to the top?

Bookshelves, eh, we should be able to find some of those cheap. I've got shelves but they are of course at capacity.

I promise you'll feel comfortable in Fort Collins. I get the same willies going near cities. Fort Collins isn't like that. No skyscrapers making you feel trapped. It's safe, safe as anything. You can walk around outside at night. The roads are big and well-kept, the stores are bright. It's not a city, it's a large small town. :-)

And yeah, Van-sama's the best at dragon slaying. (I have a new set of Escaflowne with good subtitles... and Rurouni Kenshin, you can watch Kenshin when you get out here).

It's a big corner desk...so I dunno that it would work. What I'm thinking, though, is that I might be able to find a nice big old desk once I'm there - paint it, if need be. I have a laptop, so room for cables and space for a tower isn't an issue - writing space is.

Fixing something up could be a lot of fun!

People are always advertising furniture here. College town, big turnover.

I'll have wireless internet by then, so you just need a wireless card to use it anywhere in the apartment. But I'll have cable ports on the modem too if you don't have a card yet.

Writing space... I'll lend you pencil boards and you can write at the table :-)

Not to be volunteering other people... but you do know people at the other end so if you are worried about unloading you will probably be able to round up help. As for driving big trucks through big cities... Uhauls are really easy to drive especially once you are out on the open free way. Going through a big city will be all freeway. Just plan your stops so you don't have to get gas in a major city and it will be not too painful. I find the trip itself is a minor part of uprooting and having more familiar things around when you get there make things smoother.

Heh...just came across my journal from '88. I had just barely turned 12.

November 9th: *in HUGH letters with boxes and stars around it*
GEORGE BUSH WON!
40 out of 500 states were for Bush.
Only 10 were for Dukakis.

Future FReeper? *sniff* It's the first election I really remember. I was too little to be much aware in '84.

OK, I shouldn't get distracted...back to work.

Heh...you guys have no idea what a white-knuckler I am, unfortunately! Unfortunate that I'm a white-knuckler, I mean... And freeways are what I'm afraid of! So...people saying "it's all freeway, don't worry"...I'm skeered of multi-laned roads. Of course, innercity is worse, but even so.

And I need to bring my van. I have to have a vehicle. So if I did the UHaul, it'd be a trailer...which scares me more. Turns and all that.

I need to get rid of stuff. This is good for me! And seriesly, there are only a few things I really, really don't want to part with, and those will fit in the van.

I'm worried about the cat that I want to bring, though. I suppose if I HAD to I could probably negotiate leaving him and coming back, but there will be some uphappy folks, him included.

Gah...I need to just think about today and this week, I guess!

Well you COULD drive back roads the whole way... but I would not recommend it.

Except near the cities, I'll be OK. It's just when I'm not sure what lane I should be in that I have trouble.

Lansing...Toronto...I think those are the biggies I'll be near.

Like I said, it'll be good for me. It's something I should learn how to do. But I'm dreading it a bit.
