Yes, it will come back when you re-boot..
Because it is part of your start-up list..
Your best chance of getting rid of it is closing it down in the task manager, then cleansing your system of the offending program before you close down and re-boot..
Try that MSCONFIG thing AFTER you close down qttask.exe..
Also check your directory..
C/Program Files/QuickTime.. Delete all files in the folder.. Kill it! Kill it D.E.D. Dead !....
Further, you can run "regedit", if you are brave enough to edit the registry..
here's the item line you need to find and delete..
04 - HKLM\..\Run: [Quicktime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qtttask.exe" -atboottime
OK !!
NOW you can re-boot !!

It's not necessarily spyware.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/waroftheworlds/
That link is an example of what happens with QuickTime if you don't have it installed. You want to see the trailer, you have to install QT. What you get is a little installer/controller, and that's what you see in the tray on the bottom right. Dialup users discover that controller grabs a file that's several megs in size. And if the connection fails, you still have that dang first piece to always pester you, and the only way to get rid of it is to remove it from the registry.
I absolutely loathe online software installation.
Here's what you'll need to find and remove in the registry. If you're not sure about doing it or how, get someone else to do it.

Holey moley, Batman. The fact that I don't know how to "get to" or "use" (not sure of the correct terminology) REGEDIT4 may mean I should not try this at home.

What OS are you using? If it's Windows 9x then I'm going to post a fix in a couple of minutes.

Note that this applies if you don't see QT in the Add/Remove box:
IF you're using 9x then this should take it out. First, go to Start>Run, and type in "scanreg" without the quotes. Hopefully it'll say no errors were found and ask you do you want to back it up. Say YES.
Then copy and paste all this posted below the line to a Notepad file. Save it with any name you want, but make sure to put an .reg at the end of the name. That will make it a registry file that will remove that QT installer. (Note the minus mark in front of each "HKEY"). Find that file and then double click it. It'll ask you if you want to merge it into the registry. If you feel secure, do it. Then restart your computer.

2000, huh? I'm not familiar with it, so don't try this except with 9x, since it's all I can vouch for. (I've done it a couple of times for myself and a friend).
Oh well, this might help someone else.

Here's one more thing, if you're adventurous:
I don't know the folder naming conventions for 2000, but I suspect it isn't all that different. Look for the two icons in the image. (In 9x they're in the Windows>System folder). If you find them, just move them somewhere to a place you'll remember them. It wouldn't hurt if you placed them in My Pictures, for that matter, since all you're doing is moving them out of the path that Windows is looking for them, hence they can't run.
I don't think it would, but if it was to cause any more problems, then you just put them back where you found them. Then call someone to help you. If after a couple of days you think it did solve the problem, then delete them.

I am willing to try anything. I work from hone and send out documents all the time. Now half of the time the computer shuts down when I try it. I'll see what happens. TX
