"The result is a product that is significantly more cost effective than any machine in the top 20 of the Top500 supercomputing list," said DiRienzo. "The Xserve G5 has a smaller footprint, uses less power, and it gives us the performance that we were looking for."
Of course, less power is a relative thing... it takes 110 TONS of cooling to keep it cool. Then on the other hand, the other contenders take more.

At its peak, the supercluster can exceed 25 teraflops
That would put this Mac cluster at number 5 on the top 500 list of Supercomputers.

So this is the mystery military client. All the more strange because the military leans very heavily towards running Microsoft (Dell owns the military), and the non-Microsoft machines tend to be HP or Sun servers. But it's nice to finally see someone in the military trying to get the best bang for the buck instead of buying the trend.
I'd be interested to know what happened in the comparison. I see a FOIA request coming on...

I know that other defense customers have recently purchased a large block of Apple G4 servers through Terrasoftsolutions. Terrasoftsolutions then replaces OS X with their 64bit Yellow Dog Linux. If I ever upgrade to a G5 I'll probably put yellow dog on my old G4.

Finally, you posted an actual news article rather than some random Apple press release. Congratulations!
