There were negotiations going on over Fort Sumter, and the union sent ships to reinforce Sumter during the negotiations. The South fired on Sumter before the reinforcements could get there. Hostilities were pretty much mutual.

But the fact remains that the first shot was fired by the Confederacy.

I would really encourage you to read Gov Pickens account of the events leading up to Ft. Sumter. I think you might be surprised. Have a read over the holidays.

actually the first shots were fired in 1855 in the KS-MO theatre, when the jayhawkers & KS REDLEG Militia started raiding peaceful farms in MO.
