Mateo Williford, 32, was just another tree-sitter for Greenpeace until he turned up in the last photo essay compiled by the late portraitist Richard Avedon. The 33-page montage, titled "Democracy 2004," appeared in the Nov. 1 New Yorker issue. .

Have you put yourself in harm's way?
Absolutely. At Vandenberg Air Force Base, I ended up with a gun in my face. We snuck in to attempt to stop the Star Wars missile test. I got caught by an 18-year-old soldier.
What happened?
I said, "You got me. I'm Greenpeace, nonviolent. Here, you win." He had me lay on the ground, and then they hauled me off to jail.
Was that your first visit?
For activist-related stuff I've probably gone 10 times, but never more than a day or two.

During this War on Terror, this idiot broke into Vandenberg Air Force Base and is SURPRISED by the gun in his face!?
He's lucky he wasn't executed on the spot....
Next time he won't be so lucky.......
I would have SOOOOO much respect for SFGate if that was the actual title of the article.
The guy's been caught ten times. Sentences need to increase with each incident.
Anybody know if there are any acts of violence Greenpeace has committed before? I know of stuff E.L.F. and A.L.F. does, and they should be shut down for being the terrorists they are. Let me know if Greenpeace has similar acts of violence, or if they're nothing more than an annoying but harmless activist group.
I can put the word to my friends....if you'd like
sure
The Tree SolutionAs Greenpeace expanded to become the world's largest international environmental organization, Moore's star steadily rose and he eventually became vice president of research. Then he did something even more unexpected than joining the organization in the first place. He packed up and quit... In the months before his departure, Moore had begun talking heresy. "The environmental movement had gone astray and lost its perspective on forests," Moore says. "Rather than cutting fewer trees and using less wood, we should be growing more trees and using more wood." Greenpeace branded him an eco-Judas. Now comes the biggest surprise of all. Recently published research suggests that Moore is right. Cutting down old trees could be the best way to thwart global warming.
