Regarding genetics:

I think it is a huge risk factor for alcoholism.

But I do know several people who were raised by alcoholics that never touch a drop. They have been there, and don't want to return to that world.

This is a major health problem that destroys many, many families.

Its my understanding that it skips a generation.

In my case, my grandparents and parents were, and then my brother (who also quit and turned to God) and myself. I am ready to look for warning signs with my kids.

My parents were both "functioning" alcoholics. My mother died at 66 but "looked 85," according to the nurses. I don't want to end up like her so I rarely drink anymore -- plus I seem to get a headache after just 1 or 2 drinks lately!

Unfortunately, I think the addiction tends to skip generations. My 22-year-old son has been drinking since his teens...to top it off, he was diagnosed with hepatitis C 2 years ago. He KNOWS he needs to quit but he's just not ready.

It KILLS me to watch him hurting himself this way, but until he decides it's time to quit, there's nothing I can do...except pray.
