VANITY of VANITIES
Why do you indsist on coming on threads you have no interest in and berating everyone on it?
Get. A. Life.
Tired of these %^&*!&#$ newbies...
Are you high?
Then don't click on the threads, ass clown.
Are you channeling Howlin or something...?
It's sad to see such ingorance on display. I have transcribed many metal pieces to piano. I play classical music for the most part. Many metal themes are very close to classical music.
Oh, you asked for an example -- "Killer of Giants," for one.
Try the interlude in "Orion" on Metallica's Master of Puppets. And then try to tell me with a straight face it's not music.
I listened to the 30 second snip on Amazon. And, yes, I stand by my statement.
If you can tell me there is MUCH more to the track than that snip (and I'm speaking of musical quality -- that wasn't anything anywhere near musical or quality on the Orion track, just 3 or 4 instruments wailing away), then I'll take your word for it.
"Stairway to Heaven" (don't know if you consider Led Zep a metal band or not), is, of course music (though, I'm not really wild about the song). But it isn't metal. It may be by a metal band, but it isn't heavy metal.
Then you didn't hear it. The interlude is in the middle of the track. It's not in the first thirty seconds, which I'd be the first to admit is very basic.
"Stairway to Heaven" (don't know if you consider Led Zep a metal band or not)
I don't consider LZ to be metal, no.
Try listening to "Apocalyptica" -- it's a cello quartet that plays mainly Metallica covers. Then you can hear the music without the "metal." I'd suggest "Fade to Black."
That's beautiful man! So well said. Some people.
No, I'm not serious. I just thought it sounded cooler ;0)
Music is simply a combination of sounds and silences. Period. Metal meets that description.
Deal with it.
I think I like Metallica better than the string thing. And I don't like Metallica.
You're not going to convince me that metal is music. It may have some musical qualities, and one may have the ability to take certain themes out of metal and make music. But in its form, it isn't music. Sorry, but it isn't. Its like banging on a piano. One may end up with a chord every now and then, and maybe even play a progression that makes some harmonic sense. Of course, none of this speaks to likes and dislikes, as I would never suggest there's anything wrong with your liking metal. I like football.
You can call that ignorant all you want, but I've been listening to, performing, and writing music since I was about 6 or 7. You may be a more talented or more experienced musician, I don't know. But it would be foolish to call me ignorant simply because I disagree with you.
Your definition is insane. I can bang on a piano and make "sounds and silences." I can rev the engine in my car and do the same thing.
There's nothing to deal with.
Me, too.
But it would be foolish to call me ignorant simply because I disagree with you.
Saying that a certain genre isn't music just because you don't like it is ignorant. If you just didn't like metal, fine. I wouldn't have even bothered. But you aren't the man on the mountain who gets to proclaim what the definition of music is. It is NOT "Whatever 1L likes to listen to."
Yawn. Your snooty musical preferences are showing. I've been gigging on and off for 20 years, writing and performing and recording everything from country to folk, to metal to gospel to top-40 crap, and I disagree with you fervently.
While some metal may have little to no musical merit, does not change the fact that it IS music. You may have an opinion otehrwise, but that doesn't make it a correct one.
Hey, so a quick question for ya - you are a professional R&B singer, and you are married to a guy with a Doctorate in Music, who plays Jazz professionally - so, that being said, what is your opinion about Heavy Metal - music, or not?
:)
Well, pretty much anythign by Black Sabbath, although in all honesty, their music is better suited for performing on Medieval instruments, such as done by the band Rondellus ...
