I trust a tattoo much more than a chip ~ although I do know of folks who've recovered lost pets because the animal had a microchip, not all shelters have the scanners required to read for microchips and some of the scanners currently in use are not able to read all types of microchips.

I've not tattooed my dog but I plan to the next time he needs to 'go under' for a procedure. In the meantime, I write our phone # (& his vet's #) on his belly with a permanent black marker anytime we travel with him or if tornado watches are in effect locally. These numbers generally remain legible thru about 3 bathes and are easily reapplied.

I never thought about using a permanent marker during a tornado warning and I live in tornado alley. Even though I take him with me to the closet when there's a tornado nearby, it still makes sense to use the marker.

Thanks for the idea!
