New York Yankees star Jason Giambi told a federal grand jury that he had injected himself with human growth hormone during the 2003 baseball season and had started using steroids at least two years earlier, The Chronicle has learned.
Giambi has publicly denied using performance-enhancing drugs, but his Dec. 11, 2003, testimony in the BALCO steroids case contradicts those statements, according to a transcript of the grand jury proceedings reviewed by The Chronicle.
The onetime Oakland A's first baseman and 2000 American League Most Valuable Player testified that in 2003, when he hit 41 home runs for the Yankees, he had used several different steroids obtained from Greg Anderson, weight trainer for San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds.
In his testimony, Giambi described how he had used syringes to inject human growth hormone into his stomach and testosterone into his buttocks. Giambi also said he had taken "undetectable" steroids known as "the clear" and "the cream" -- one a liquid administered by placing a few drops under the tongue, the other a testosterone-based balm rubbed onto the body.
The 33-year-old Yankee said Anderson had provided him with all of the drugs except for human growth hormone, which he said he had obtained at a Las Vegas gym. Anderson also provided him syringes, Giambi said.
Agent Arn Tellem, who accompanied Giambi and his younger brother, Jeremy, to the grand jury, did not return calls seeking comment. Other efforts to reach the Giambis were unsuccessful.

BTW, isn't it a crime to leak grand jury testimony?
Heh!...
But maybe Bonds' has been in training developing "skull muscles"?
Yes, I understand when Jeff Garcia still Played out there they would train together, and Jeff was commonly overheard saying...."Yeah, thats it Barry, work that skull"
Yep, good points and completely overlooked by most.
John Olerud provided great equilibrium, veteran leadership, composure, and a steady bat in that Yankee lineup.
Without him, the machine broke down completely.
The Yankees are officially cursed.
Scary but true then?? Lol...
The 26TWSCYs were in a tail spin before they picked up Olerud in July. If Olerud is not at First Base on Opening Day, you will know that the 26TWSCYs have completely lost their minds and the new Dark Age of Bronx Baseball has begun.
Playmate of the Year Carmella Deceasare
"Fair enough, but I wasn't the one who started this, by posting graphics and comments saying that the Yankees cheated in the 2003 ALCS, and the Red Sox were robbed!"
But Steroid use is cheating, isn't it?!
This years loss to the Red Sox was stunning, but last years losing to the Marlins despite a 3 to 1 payroll advantage and roid use was a colossal choke also.
Your comments REALLY surprise me..you're taking Sheffield's statements at face value.. I don't..he's lyig through his teeth..which is exactly what the Yankee's problem is..They'd have to do exactly the same thing to Sheffield as Giambi..
My point is that it's naive for anybody, especially Sox fans, to think that the names in the BALCO scandal, particularly Giambi's, are the only people in baseball using steroids. If Sox fans are going to point fingers at the Yankees, I'm going to point the finger right back at some of their own questionable players.
Did you know that Richard Gere was married to Cindy Crawford too ? ; )
(I kid Jeff....I just dont like Bonds.)
Unless Sheffield testified differently to the grand jury, there's no way to prove that he knew what he was taking. It's a technicality, but it makes a difference. That's what Jayson Stark is also saying on ESPN.
The other thing is that there's something in every player's contract about keeping themself in first-class personal condition. And Giambi did not do that, particularly with his tumor, which appears to be steroid-related.
I know. It's just a good excuse to post Carmella pics.
The pics are their own excuse....lol
1. You believe Sheffield because he says he didn't know what he was taking. That's just absurd on the face of, eben before you look at Sheffield's track record..He ain;t no choir boy..
2. You're saying that even if Sheffield used steroids..the Yankees should give him a pass because he didn't make himself sick, and thus effect his ability to perform, unlike Giambi?
So the year 2000 is no longer in the 21st century? Who knew?
Lots of people. The year 2000 was the last year of the 20th century. Centuries start with the '01 year and end with the '00 year.
Yep, and that's also because there is no evidence Sheffield ever used steroids as a Yankee, while there's mountains of evidence Giambi did so as a Yankee. So what Sheffield did in the past would not violate his contract with the Yanks. That's the bottom line, and the way the Yankees are going to approach it. It may be a mercenary way, but that's the way I'm sure the Yanks are looking at it.
It's arbitrary, anyway, since this isn't really the 2004th year of existence on earth. The vast majority of people count the century as starting in the '00 year. Saying that's not true is like suggesting that people should say whom instead of who when referencing a direct object -- it may technically be accurate, but it's not going to happen.
Your right about Barry Bonds. The noose is slowly tightening. His records will be tainted.
