Davis resigns as Browns' head coach (Happy days are here again!!!)

The speculation is finally over in Cleveland for Butch Davis.

FOXSports.com has learned that Davis has resigned as head coach and head of football operations for the Browns today, just one week after the team announced he would not be fired this season. The Browns are adamant that they have not fired Davis but this is completely his decision. Nearly two months ago the team decided to at the very least strip the Browns' top dog of his general manager duties — the two have since hired a head hunter to help owner Randy Lehrner and President John Collins do preliminary leg work on potential GM replacements.

The decision that Davis would be out as head coach after the year came soon after and nearly came to a head last Sunday night. However, no change was ultimately made — until today.

Davis and team brass met late last night and came to the agreement it was time to move on to pursue a college job.

Yeah, I heard about the Willingham situation a little while ago.

I have been worried about how the President of UF, Bernie Matchen, has been sticking his ego into this coaching search. The connection between Matchen and Meyer (Univ of Utah) was one that couldn't be overlooked and it was suspected that, unless something happened at ND or Michigan (which I believe Meyer also had a "dream job" out for also), that we was coming to Gainesville.

I have been personally turned off by how the new President of UF has handled the situation altogether. He basically told Steve Spurrier to "get in line like everyone else". Now, despite what you think about Steve Spurrier, you don't treat him like that; he deserves a bit more respect than that. And, the word on the ground here in Gainesville is that Spurrier was interested in coming back to Florida, Matchen's gruff manner in which he handled Spurrier is what sent Spurrier elsewhere (South Carolina).

I just hope that the Gators get a forward-looking, attacking-style coach that has good recruiting roots. I definitely think that Petrino is the best pick.
