Black bear are not hunters.... and attacks are rare. Scrapes that do happen usually involve babies. Black bear are more likely to attack your ice chest than you, if they wander in to camp.
I only brought it up because in the lower 48, people who have tried bear meat probably are eating black bear.
Brown bears, Kodiaks and Grizzlies, are quite different, and their mileage varies.

Bears scavenge mostly, though a really hungry one might take an occassional deer. They attack people to protect territory or young, because of fear, or because people are often just stupid. ( Come on bear, get in the car so I can take a picture!)
